Cut open ultra from around 2017-2018. Filter been in service for about two years on our 15 model GMC with 5.3L. Drove that truck about 7,000 miles in those two years. Mostly towing a boat to the lake and vacation in Florida.

I change oil once a year, last oil change it was Valvoline extended protection. I can’t remember what oil I used in 24.

Seems like a lot of crud at the bottom of the filter. After only 7,000 miles.

Put in Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30. Figured with me towing the boat all the time 30 weight oil would do no harm to that 5.3.

Too bad farm stopped putting in a gasket at the bypass spring.

Thanks. The good ole days!!!

These OG Ultras were fantastic.
I’m gonna miss them. Always readily available near me at any time. Microgard Select has taken the crown for my three vehicles now. Well, the rav4 I just picked up nine OEM filters for with the dealer sale, but the other two are getting selects.

I assume this engine is DI, so the soot you see in the bottom is perfectly normal. Great looking filter, everything went down hill after Worst Brands got their grubby and corrupt little mitts on FRAM.
Yeah this 5.3 is direct injected. It seems like every oil change this engine has a bunch of sludge at the bottom of the filter.
I might have to start changing oil every six months instead of a year intervals.

DI produces soot, like a diesel, so this is perfectly normal. You want to see it dispersed and ending in the filter like this, not agglomerated and clumped up in deposits in your engine, which would mean that the DI package was failing to do its job.

Did you ever look in the bottom of a 1 qt oil container? Like Pennzoil or Mobil 1. There is sludge in the bottom of every 1. It's the additives or whatever they put in there separating out.

I usually don’t see this in my other vehicles.
