So yesterday I went to the Autozone near me and got the oil change special of VNGML and a STP non ecore filter for $24.99. I then went to Advance Auto parts and got some PYB 5W30 and driveworks filter for brother in laws car. What is everyone's thoughts on the driveworks and stp filters? I used one driveworks 4612 filter before for 4500 miles with QSGB 5w30 and didnt blow anything up.

thanks in advance guys

What car is the 4612 for?

I used them on my friends Protege and the ADBV didn't work; consequently I am not using them anymore unless I can find a car with a hole up filter orientation.

Search this forum; you will find numerous complaints.

I know little about the DW filters, but people here seem to think they're decent, at least for 3-5k OCIs.

STP filters are made by Champion Laboratories and also seem to be pretty decent. I'd say the two are about equal, at least when comparing a non-Ecore STP.

The 4612 is for a 05' Acura TL Simplegifts. I am going to give brother a couple of Puro classics if the Driveworks leaks or he doesnt like the Driveworks. I used a Driveworks 4612 on my car already, didnt cut it open but it seemed to work ok. I see that STP doesnt have the correct filter for my honda also. I wont use a small filter like a 6607 on my vehicle as it requires a PH 2867 champ filter or puro 14610

Some dissected DW's have been posted here before, they 'look' like a decent made low tier filter. No published efficiency specs though.

A bit confused by your post though. The DW4612 is the Puro 14612 equivalent, the shorter version of the 14610/7317. It's also the equivalent size to the STP 6607 you mentioned. DW and STP both downsize/consolidate the 14610/7317 to the 14612/6607 size.

I recently removed an ST s2808 linked below from an 01 Civic, also not wanting to use the smaller 6607. It's the size used on most pre 2001 Hondas, same size gasket as smaller 14610/14612/6607. 'If' you have diameter clearance for the wider STP 2808 application, it should work fine. Though I went farther on the STP 2808, I'd say either filter you mentioned would be good for ~5k oci.

All that said, for $3.27 at Wally for all Puro Classic spec'd size applications, they would be my first choice over the DW or STP.

A competitor's rep once posted they had tested the Driveworks at only 83% efficiency.

That and numerous ADBV complaints have been mentioned here. Don't they let you upgrade to a Puro Classic for a buck more?

DW's seem to be the exact same filter as a Pronto in different packaging. The ADBV's on them seem to work better than the Fram orange cans in my applications.

Yeah, I could have upgraded. I think I will give the Driveworks to my neighbor as her car uses that filter also. I have bout 9 P1'S and 7 Puro classics so probably use a Puro classic with the Valvoline Nextgen Maxlife 5w30 this time for 5k or so

They aren't exactly the same as a Pronto. They both have the same thick, tough media that a lot of off-brand filters do. However, Prontos have round holes in the center tube, while Driveworks have directional flutes. Driveworks also seems to use coil springs instead of leaf springs.

This is true for all the ones I've seen, anyway. Given the fluted tubes and coil springs, I'd guess they are a Donaldson offshoot/clone.

I'd take the 80% efficiency comment with a grain of salt. It was a Fram rep that gave that figure, and if you look on the box of most Frams the efficiency it lists for all brand-x filters is 80% (vs the Fram's 96%). Seems to just be the company line.

FWIW, I've been putting DW-5436s in Mom's VUE and it hasn't blown up yet.

STP is fine. Made by Champs lab as already mentioned. I just used one this weekend...box shows a 96% effiecency and holds 20% more dirt than the leading brand...whatever that may mean to us. But its a good filter, use with confidence.

Many of the STP's are e-cores, I would not call those a "good filter". Same are still the classic Champ Labs style though.

Good point about the eCore..however I've not seen or heard of any problems with that design anywhere other than a couple posts here on BITOG. I don't think there is any problem with them anymore than paper endcaps on Frams. (for the record I don't use Frams and use Bosch most frequently)

There are almost no real "problems" with Frams endcaps but people think they are cheap and hate them with a passion. The e-cores on the other hand are well known to blow media out through the large gaps in the inner cage and cause serious, real problems including engine damage or even failure.

And the e-cores also use a media/fiber endcap as well, just like the Frams do, except they seem to come off much easier than Fram's version.

The endcap issue isn't really an issue in my mind, the oil pressure pushes the endcap towards the media, not away from it. Most of the orange can hate is simply misguided internet hysteria.

Kinda glad I didnt use the Driveworks filter. I ended up going to Autozone and got the QSGB oil and STP filter special deal. I gave the PYB 5W30 to the neighbor for in her 04' Cavalier. I used the QSGB with a STP 6607 FILTER; will run this for 5k and hopefully uoa it.
