I went to a shop to have my serpentine belt changed however the tech doing the work thought I wanted an oil change and a serpentine replacement because he read the work order/scheduling sheet wrong. Bye bye to my Fram Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum.. I now have a "Microgard" oil filter and Peak Synthetic Blend 5w-20.. a little annoyed but I didn't give them too much hassle about it.

I've had that happen. Brought my car in to diagnose a noise and replace a wheel bearing. They decided to drain and fill the transaxle of my 2qts of redline; according to them "it looked black" Really? No GL4 oil I've ever drained out looked black.

I didn't ask them too, was already there for too long because they were having a hard time getting the new belt on. I had about 1000 miles on the PP and Fram Ultra

I really despise places that try to pull this.

How about charging them the difference between what you had in and what they put in? [edit due to reading all above now] Since it had only 1000mi, get the cost of replacement.

edit: and THIS

How many miles were on the Fram and the PP.oil? You left out the most important part.

I find that my car runs best when I'm the only one under the hood; but I'm crazy. Last time I took my car to a stealership and they drained my Mobil 1 synthetic with about 2K on it and replaced it with their dealer bulk oil, I (verbally) blew a gasket and refused to pay for it. (It was in for other service and they told me an oil change was SOP replacing an intake gasket) They told me fine; they would put a mechanic's lien on the car and keep it. I threatened to call the police, they offered to hand me the phone.

I grudgingly paid my bill, then I spent $200 on a custom locking oil cap. No one since has attempted to change my oil. Of course, I no longer patronize any stealership.

I can tell you several nightmare stories about friends cars at service garages, including stealerships.

What is to there to get mad about? They made a mistake and didn't charge you for it.

Your oil got replaced with a GF5 SN oil that meets the same spec as what was drained. Micro guard filters are a nice filter.

No reason to throw a fit IMO. It was their error and they made it right by not charging you. There are much better things in life to worry About than the performance difference between PP and another SN GF-5 oil that is free.

I would have told them to take off at least $40 from the bill so I could go buy oil and a filter to replace what they put in there.

It's the law here. If I do something to your car with out authorization I cant charge you for it

I had that happen once when I took my truck in for some work and also asked for a chassis lube. That is almost never done apart from an oil change, so the tech habitually did both.

I had a similar experience with the Ford dealership doing my 6.0 PSD work van-they drained the Premium Blue Extreme 5W40 (even though it wasn't due AND I left a post-it note on the steering wheel & told the advisor NOT to change it) & put 15W40 in it. Of course they left it outside, & being winter, it dropped to 30F. Got to prove to them that it needed syn-it romped, smoked all over, sounded like it was trying to hydrolock. Needless to say, that was an expensive attempt to rip off a customer, they had to order & put the 5W40 back in.

I tend to agree with donnyj08 a bit here. The Microgard filters are not like a some others that are not too good. On the other hand I can see being annoyed too. And jd didn't make to big a fuss over it. So the way I see it... He handled it pretty well all things considered.
