Ruby was a Chihuahua. Now most Chihuahuas can be somewhat disagreeable dogs, but Ruby was different. Oh she had a little Chihuahua in her, just enough to give her spirit (she did chase a deer off the property once, imagine a Chihuahua going after a deer). But overall, she was a very sweet little dog, even the veterinarians were happy to see her.
She was middle-aged when she came to us. Found as a stray on the streets of Philadelphia. I suspect she had good owners in her early life, at least by her temperament. We also suspect she had a litter of puppies in her past, based on her teats. She did have a bad heart, but got her "tick-tock" medicine regularly. She had a little bit of a crooked tail and occasionally made rude noises, I guess you could say she fit right in with the family.
I'll miss her earnest barking for breakfast, that was about the only time she barked unnecessarily, but I guess we all have to let it out sometimes. I'll miss her gentile nature, her absolute trust. She was a rare dog.
I took her to the vet's late yesterday as she wasn't doing well. They gave her an injection to counter a fluid build-up in the lungs. I brought her home. She was tended to, but had a difficult evening. She passed at 10:30. We'll bury her at first-light.
Remember to appreciate those in you life, both two-legged and four-legged. Time draws us inexorably into the future and things change.
And if you have a dog, slide it a treat and tell it "Here's one for Ruby".
Life goes on.
