Ruby was a Chihuahua. Now most Chihuahuas can be somewhat disagreeable dogs, but Ruby was different. Oh she had a little Chihuahua in her, just enough to give her spirit (she did chase a deer off the property once, imagine a Chihuahua going after a deer). But overall, she was a very sweet little dog, even the veterinarians were happy to see her.

She was middle-aged when she came to us. Found as a stray on the streets of Philadelphia. I suspect she had good owners in her early life, at least by her temperament. We also suspect she had a litter of puppies in her past, based on her teats. She did have a bad heart, but got her "tick-tock" medicine regularly. She had a little bit of a crooked tail and occasionally made rude noises, I guess you could say she fit right in with the family.

I'll miss her earnest barking for breakfast, that was about the only time she barked unnecessarily, but I guess we all have to let it out sometimes. I'll miss her gentile nature, her absolute trust. She was a rare dog.

I took her to the vet's late yesterday as she wasn't doing well. They gave her an injection to counter a fluid build-up in the lungs. I brought her home. She was tended to, but had a difficult evening. She passed at 10:30. We'll bury her at first-light.

Remember to appreciate those in you life, both two-legged and four-legged. Time draws us inexorably into the future and things change.

And if you have a dog, slide it a treat and tell it "Here's one for Ruby".

Life goes on.

Sorry for your loss, always remember her gentle licks on your face and the happiness she brought to your family.

She's in heaven now playing with all her friends. You now have an extra guardian angel watching over you.

Rick -

They sure get into your heart, don't they?

We lost our little female rescue Pug in May, and still miss her a lot. Same thing, congestive heart failure. A very sad day.

Her mate is getting crotchety but is still going strong. Extra cuddles and treats whenever he looks a bit lost.

My condolences for your loss. Every day I am reminded of the unconditional love that our dog has for us. She greets us at the door when we come home from work and sees us out the door as we leave. Harley(black lab) always knows when one of us are ill or down in the dumps as she will not leave our side, unless a squirrel or cottontail shows their tail in the yard.

Have any pictures of the pup you can share?

Sorry, I don't have a photo site set-up.

It was just a curious day, Ruby's passing gave me pause to reflect on the changing nature of life.

And if you have a dog, give it a treat and an ear scratch. I'm not kidding about that.

Thanks for the kind words.

Condolences Rick. I've lost one Doberman to heart failure and have one more with the disease. Give them a fighting chance as you did. Ruby had a good papa.

Rick,

Remember her as she was, with all her wonderful qualities and whatever faults. That will honor her memory.

My late cats Arizona, Oreo, Tatiana, and others -- I never refer to them as "saints" or "perfect cats." They weren't. But they were my friends, and with friends the faults come along with the great qualities.

Bummer. I still miss my St. Bernard. Excuse me, I need to hug my cats.

Well...I am now covered in black, orange, and tan cat hair, but I do feel better.
