One child policy dropped

Today's talking heads have it that China has dropped their one child policy, to better manage their economy.

Does that mean that they've now established their army ?

Think about of it, tens of millions of males, with no statistical chance of ever marrying and raising a family other than through conquest ?

I think it simply has more to do with the aging population. I remember hearing something along the lines that 1 in 4 Chinese citizens where senior citizens.

In the next 20-30 years it's expected to be anywhere from 30-40%.

Personally I thought it was a good idea. Their jobs are already pretty limited. It seemed like an effective way to keep pooulation down.

Also it wasn't just 1 child. If one of the spouses was from a 1 child family they where aloud to have 2 children. You could also get past it buy paying a yearly tax.

The issue is in Chinese culture the son takes care of his aging parents. Thats just the way it is. So if limited to one child, most parents would want a boy. Thus when an ultrasound came back with a female, the mother would have an abortion.

So there are a couple of generations where there are very few females.

But now many Chinese are living in urban areas and its too expensive to have more than one child.

I wonder how that will affect the number of Chinese orphans coming to the US? I have a couple of nieces who were adopted from over there, having been abandoned either because the family already had a child or was wanting a boy.

Not knowing OP's siblings' deal, who are you to judge? They want a family, they got a family, and the size they choose is their business alone. As well as if it's through conception or adoption.

Unlike the west: communist Gvt pretty much controls everything: from what you eat/drink to how many kids you bear.

Their thought is to control everything based on centralised policies and decisions made by their own few.

In regards to 1-child policy, methinks they've realised that they screwed up big time after some 36 years of artificially imposing control over the situation, and as the labour force gets old and many reaching retiring age (with no fresh blood to replenish their work force), they are facing a double-whammy.

While I do not dispute their original intentions to try to keep their exploding population in-check (thus the policy), fact is, most ancient oriental cultures (incl. East Indians, etc.), favours male over females, and when such policy imposed onto the population, the population responded by skewing the population growth with male childs than female (abortion, killing involved).

Now, they realised that it's a bit too late to steer back the boat, as the prominent effect can be seen now: less female in their society for marriage; compounded with most metro cities young families refusal to have kids (which deems normal in a highly educated people in a high standards of living environment).This can also be detected/seen in Japan where their rapidly aging population and lack of fresh replenishment (new young families refused to bear child or have very few).


It's just another fine example of authoritarian state thinking that they can control everything (not!), and ended up making a mess:
