OM 642 Coolant. HOAT or OAT?

Hi Gents.

My Grand Cherokee has a Mercedes 3.0CRD OM642 Engine. The Handbook calls for only a HOAT Coolant to be used. My Jeep dealer informs me that they now use an OAT Coolant and it will be fine in my Engine.

Is it acceptable to use the OAT Coolant in this Engine?

I would stick with the Mopar red/G-05/Premium Gold HOAT and not use the Mopar/FCA purple OAT myself, unless the GC came with purple originally? Not sure about the UK, but the gold HOAT is a LOT cheaper than the purple OAT here in the USA. What year is your Jeep?

That Mercedes engine would have originally been designed for G48 HOAT, which is a Silicate containing OAT coolant.

You could use Zerex G05, G48 or even G40 ( G40 and G48 are very similar in formulation, )

What's in the engine, still the factory fluid or it's been changed to something different?

P.S. ahem.. G05 have no 2-EHA salts. (G48 has them however) .Look what Sayjac says here:

If Chrysler are still unwilling to use 2-EHA containing coolants today , I would definitely stick to G05 .

Hi Gents

Thanks for all the help. I did not know HOAT was what Mercedes would have used. I wondered if Jeep had used the HOAT so one coolant could be used across all the jeep range.

I have no idea what is in at the moment. All I can say is it is pink.

I note too that the Comma G05 carries the Chrysler MS9769G spec.

The Genuine 5 year Mopar fluid is hard to get in UK and very expensive if it is found.

Jeep UK uses PETRONAS / Selenia coolants and Lubes.

A little naughty of them to substitute an OAT for my engine then. Shame too as they only charge £40 for the coolant change.

The Akros Farm Flu that was suggested by your Jeep dealer in another thread of yours looks to be HOAT G48 coolant with 2-EHA,silicates and borates , blue in color :

It mentions MS-9769 but I don't think it is officially certified.

I would not be very excited to use it (although MB used to/still lists it as replacement to G05 in their vehicles). Go with G05 (Comma's) instead.
If you're the original owner of the vehicle and you have not changed the fluid then it must be the Factory Fill MS-9769G (G05) which for Chrysler was/is coloured in pinkish.

You can get G48 without 2-Eha

I believe Comma G48 doesn't have it, neither does their G40 or GG40.

I can also get AD brand G48 without 2-Eha locally.

I'd go with G-05 or G-48 without 2-EH.

I have run OAT for a decade in an OM617, which is imo a riskier proposition, but I'd rather not. Better off sticking with HOAT which is readily available.

With OAT coolants really as long as you monitor pH and it remains neutral or alkaline it can be run almost indefinitely.

OAT inhibitors like Sebacic Acid a.k.a Sebacate which is the one found in almost all modern OAT coolants has an extremely low depletion rate, and by extremely low i mean as low as 2% during the recommended coolant change interval.

As a matter of fact I've never seen a G48 data sheet without listing it.

Of course there might be some other HOAT's that do not use 2-eha (by different manufacturers like Dow Chemicals or Total for example, but they don't have g48 designation).

..and they do not carry Glysantin G48 designation but are of the same performance level . Whoever the manufacturer of the chemistry they did not include 2-eha in the formulation.

Mobil's euro coolants use BASF chemistry and proudly state it.

Not certain about Shell but their analog of G48 (Shell Glycoshell) certainly has 2-eha :
