LiquiMoly is just Meguin with some double bubble of marketing perceptions, but the gentleman is essentially right. He didn't claim that all oils performed the same, but that by performing they hardly reveal if they're HC, GTL or PAO.
We basically were stripped of unnecessary belief and can look into the light in new awe now. At least if we thought these VW-oils would somehow rely or depend on PAO.

Group III/III+ hydrocarbon base oils will outperform PAO base oils within the use of common commuter engines. It has greater solubility, higher pressure-viscosity coefficient, and greater additive response. Unless you're trying to run an engine at -40*C or >150*C, there's no advantage of using PAO base oils over a quality Group III+.

Q: Should one use a PAO oil or an HC oil?

OK: This choice is often not even available. Almost all oil development nowadays takes place on the basis of HC oils. Many oil specifications can only be met with HC oils.

That should be reworded to say:

Many oil specifications today can be met with HC oils.

as always less than honest!! better than Big Pharmas DRUGS where they teSt their own products, show the good + throw out the bad!! all in all todays group III fake synthetics are a good value @ $4 a qt + or - for brand name products. research likely is mostly about making lubes that meet the specs for less cost + since the introduction of fake group III synthetics even Amsoil fell off the PAO tout!!

What they should do is heavily bombard all advertising avenues with a pitch of," Now with superior group III technology!". No more old school, inferior true synthetic in our Casstrol or Liqui-Moly! We don't allow that second rate swill into our pure group II/III oils! :giggle:
