It's got the 472 which is pretty much the same thing. It's just like driving a diesel you can put gas in and they last forever. From what I have heard.
 
Oh My God! That is one clean Bug. My parents had a '67 way back. That was one great car. Your's is outstanding! I've always liked the Bug's. True Classic's.

Classic cars that have been kept/restored to stock are just incredible to experience.

Those slant sixes almost never wear out and will take abuse that very few people would never dish out. I've owned 2 of them in Dodge Darts. A '65 and a '63.
 
What about highest mileage daily driver? that is with original motor and trans? that VW is nice, when i was about 5 yrs old, my neighbors had one and I remember those clear hoses. they told me it was coca-cola in there!!!

I thought my 96 was old as far as a DD!

Question is, how long are the commutes on the DD's? :p

I go about 700k/wk in mine.. I would never take a 30 year old car that far every week.

It depends on where I'm working. For the past 8 months it's been about 5 miles each way to work except for December where I had to commute a few times 135 miles each way every week or so and 250 miles each way in one 2 week period not counting the 135 back home after the 2 weeks in a motel room when the contract was done.

For the ten years before that it was 600 miles about 3 times a year to go home for more than a few days off and maybe a few trips around town when I wasn't taking any real time off. I've driven from Virginia to Little Rock, AR then from AR to Reno and back to Salt Lake City in it with numerous trips from Salt Lake City to Reno, NV or Sacramento and back over the years.

I wouldn't hesitate to get in it tommorrow and drive 2000 miles. The key is keeping track of what might go wrong before it does and maintaining the car. Also, the around town, short trip driving on one of the old V-8's is tough. They load up unlike a new computer controlled, injected car. Mine at least needs a good high speed run once in a while or it starts running rougher.

It also gets better mileage the faster you go. It get's 10 around town with all the idling necessary to warm it up at 10 degrees but gets 14mpg if you keep it up there between 80 and 90mph on the highway. At 65 it only gets about 12mpg. I've heard of people getting 18mpg highway out of the same car.

I'm still driving my first car as a daily driver. Makes a 62 mile daily round trip. Odometer reads 293,xxx. Gets 34-35 MPG on highway. What is it? 1986 Ford Escort GT.

If I had to pick the ONE best engine ever manufactured, the slant six would be it.

Daily driver--67 Mustang coupe. Still looks like new. Ditto on those slant 6's. I had 6-7 fork trucks with that engine. They were on propane as the environment they worked in had a LOT of hot slag and metal splashing around. Indestructable! John--Las Vegas.
 
It's easy to have an old daily driver in the warm climates. The real challenge is owning a daily driver for many years driven regularly in the winter here up north.

Up until recently my 92 chevy cavalier was my DD. Been driving it for the last three and 1/2 years and it gets around 30mpg when its running right.

Until my 1986 Jetta got totaled the other day my Sister in Law was daily driving it back and forth from San Diego to Orange Country.

394,000 miles on it when it was taken out..

I thought an old '86 Toyota was a really old daily driver - I drove it daily until 2006. I was wrong!!

Well, I don't live in MN or anything but it's been in Utah and Nevada for the last 12 years. It does get down to around 20 but this winter it has been cold, real cold. Down around zero or below. It does cause warm up problems. I'll give you that. Getting it started has never been a problem even below zero.
