Ok to store oil in workshop?

Just wondering if you guys think its safe to store oil in a workshop that isn't climate controlled. Right now, I keep it on a rack in the laundry room. But, the wife-to-be won't go for having oil anywhere near the inside of her nice clean house. That'd be a big

on my part. I'm building up a little stash, but I'm not sure if the humidity swings outside would shorten the shelf life of the oil.

I keep it out side in the garage. Climate controlled to 0-110F. Have not noticed anything. Considering what it goes through in an engine, the temp is the least of your worries.
 
What temps will it see on the low side? Shelf life drops from 5 to 2 years if the temps get low. I have moved my stash from the garage to my basement to extend the shelf life
 
I believe its better to store oil at a constant temperature (with 60 to 70 degrees F being optimal). I agree that sub-freezing temps are more deleterious than higher temps.

For what its worth I just installed 15 year old SH rated semi-synthetic 10w30 in my Buick with no ill effects.
 
I keep my oil stash in my garage. It gets well over 100 degrees in there in summer, winter doesn't get very cold here, maybe a few nights in the 40's in January and February. I have never had any problems at all with my oil. I only stash about a year to year and a half worth at a time though.
 
Oil will be fine but expect cardboard cases to degrade from the bottles "sweating" humidity.

I lost a little pure antifreeze concentrate last winter, it apparently froze, swelled, and violated its container.
 
mitsu -- "... not sure if the humidity swings ...".humidity will not affect a sealed plastic container of oil.as far as the wife to be not wanting oil in the house -- if you only have enough oil to fill 1 shelf in a laundry room, then that's no reason to complain.it's good that this is happening BEFORE you marry.many would view this as a red flag.be afraid. be very afraid.
 
Is there no other place in the house you can store it? come on it's your place too be a man!!

my large stash is in the house wouldn't think of keeping it outside.
 
Store it outside. The oil doesn't care how cold or warm it is in the container - it's gonna be at least that cold at probably twice as hot in your engine anyway. If it's 'cold' (a very relative term in East Texas) and time for an oil change bring it inside the house to warm up before shaking well & pouring it in the engine.

Never understood the need/want/desire to build up a big stash. Seems like most folks buy up oil left and right and wind up trading, selling or returning most of it when that oil goes out of vogue or something new or improved comes out. I've got more oil on hand now than I ever have and that's just a 6 gallon case of Schaeffer 9000 5w40... but I only have 2 cars that go a minimum of 10k mile OCI so I don't change it that often either.
 
Sounds like its not too bad to keep it in the shop. Read an FAQ at the mobil 1 site and it said 5 years and nothing about temp or humidity.

And, guys...seriously. C'mon. If the worst thing she does is want to keep a clean, clutter-free house; and all I have to do is keep my oil (and most other "man stuff", as she calls it) out in the shop (which is the reason I have a shop in the first place), then that sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I've seen how some folks keep a house these days...

Sacrifice little things like where your oil stash goes, help a little around the house, and she WILL notice, and return the favor in those "other ways" that were hinted towards a few posts up.

Just remember, it's oil, not milk...

I still have a good bit of 2004 vintage green GC in my Florida garage -- some of it will be installed today in the Avalon.

I just make sure that all the bottle caps are tight once in a while, and let it sit. You'll be fine.

Now, perhaps you do need to start working on your fiance...

WITH WINGS, man !then, when you least expect it,she'll want to do ------ an oil change.

Holy [censored]!!! HAHA! You guys are killin' me!

Edit: If she ever wanted to learn to do an oil change, I'd be more than happy to teach her (with close supervision). Seriously doubt this ever happens, though.

Also, I can't forget to add that I have a free ticket to a lifetime of as much golf as I want because she plays too! She's actually not bad, sporting a 20 hanidap. We'll have her down to a 15 in a year easy.

She's a keeper. Period.
