Hey guys, got a question for you, I have a Fram ultra on deck, and was wondering what oils are good for a 10K oci. I know the usual suspects Royal Purple, AMSOIL Signature Series, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, but what about PP, PU, or Quaker State Ultimate Durability? Right now I'm using GOIL, but I'm concerned about the low TBN's and the rapid viscosity shearing, I'm only using it for 5k because of that, even though I'm putting a fresh qt in every 2200 miles. This is for my malibu 3.1 liter, thanks in advance!

Those 3.1 are pretty easy on oil. Any of the above oils you've said should be good for 10,000 miles I would think. To be certain, it'd be a good idea to do a used oil analysis. But with it using that much oil, I'd say you'd be pretty safe on any of them. Another option you might consider, seeing as it's using a decent amount of oil, would be to use Rotella T6. That motor won't care if the oil is a bit thicker.

That's what I was thinking, with the current consumption consdered, I would have replenished all the oil by the time I reached 10k miles.

I know she's burning some oil, not too much @1 qt per 2200 miles, but I have a problem deviating from the 5w30 it calls for, plus this car and I have a love/hate relationship as far as fuel economy go, and I'd hate to see it drop further. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is a oil I've long been wanting to try, but it seems that folks seem to speak highly of the Pennzoil offerings.

Having said that, I do have 5 qts of Amsoil OEM, an oil I don't see discussed much, does anyone think that might be a good choice, I bought it on sale at Orielly's.

have you ever done a used oil analysis? see how much the car shears/utilizes oils?
its always best to do one when going over the OEM suggestions.

What filter are you going to be using? a long drain filter?

Edit: Nvm see the Fram on deck

No, I've never done a used oil analysis, so I'm Sticking with the basics, what oils are up to an extended OCI? I already know which oils are advertised as being such, I've been on Amsoils website, and RP's,and I know some oil company's refrain from stating as much, but what other oils can be considered for an extended OCI?

What kind of fuel mileage do you get with the car now? Slightly off topic, but those cars normally do excellent on gas. My 96 with the 3100 normally averages 25 or so with a mix of city and highway, and can do 30 fairly easily on straight highway runs. Your car being lighter than mine and I believe geared a bit higher should be able to pull those numbers and then some. Before trying to stretch out the oil changes, it could be good to make sure it's running right to start off with. If it's got an injector hanging open or it's running too rich, could cause excess fuel dilution, which would be rough on the engine if the same oil is in there for 10,000 miles.

I agree with the above post and want to add that if its running good then go with QS for it definitely the best bang for your buck in extended OCI.

I'm getting around 22-23 mpg now with a mixture of city/ highway, I replaced an egr vavle recently and was expecting a boost in mpg's but alas , not much, so I'm resistant to adding a thicker oil. I think I'll stick with Goil, and maybe just bump up to a 6k oci. Thanks guys!

I'd go with Amsoil it will definitely go 10k + very easily and that is what I have switched to now and plan on sticking with it for the life of my vehicle and will save oil and money when doing the 10k oil changes with Amsoil or any other high end oil but I figured I would go with because even with shipping Amsoil is still cheaper then Royal Purple even with the Amsoil oil filter too. Amsoil has been around a lot longer then them to and a lot of people use Amsoil and I have only heard good things about it.

If I were to go the AMSOIL Signature Series route, I would do used oil analysis to find out how far past 10K I could go between changes. Unless your engine is a mechanical mess AMSOIL Signature Series should be good beyond 10K.

At the rate you're adding oil, I think almost any oil would work for a 10K OCI.
Why is consumption as high as it is?
Is the PCV system working, with a good valve and no clogs in the tubing?
How has the engine been maintained over its life?
Could the rings be stuck?
How many miles and how is it driven?
Is it simply a matter of wear?
Ruling out the above, you might try Valvoline Maxlife.
I've had good results with it in two of our cars, so it might help with your consumption as well, and with, say, three or four quarts added over the OCI, it could do 10K.

I wouldn't forget about Rotella T5. After all it's a dual rated oil that is certainly capable of going the distance while keeping were in check and cleaning too.

Do you really think the oil consumption is excessive? 1 quart every 2200 miles? GM says that 1 qt every 1000 miles is within normals, I know they are just covering their butts, but still, some posters have said they experience much more. My PVC valve was just replaced, I used a puralator part instead of the AC/delco. Frankly I'm more concerned with my fuel consumption. The engine purrs like a kitten, a bit of upper vavletrain noise until it comes up to temp, but after that it behaves like a new motor, and power has not fallen off at all, and certainly no smoke at all. I used mainly Pennzoil conventional, Valvoline conventional, and occasionally a Valvoline syn-blend, with a top off of formula shell or Pennzoil conventional, I rember once throwing in a quart of mobil 1...for the first 100k. At 100k I switched to synthetics, first rp, and now goil, and I always use a premium filter.

Most manufacturers claim that a quart per K is normal consumption.
Engines do vary in their consumption, and if yours has been steady at a quart per 2.2K for some time, that is probably normal for it.
I'd still recommend Maxlife.
I've found it to greatly reduce oil use in the Impreza and the BMW.
It also yielded a very clean used oil analysis after use in the BMW, although I only ran it 4K.
There is no point in using a more costly oil if you're going to be adding that much, although FAR G-Oil is a good pick.
The adds will replenish the additive pack of the oil, allowing a 10K drain, although a used oil analysis after a 10K run might be interesting.
