oil smells like gas

im both my hondas 07 civic 1.8l and my 95 civic 1.5 l it smells like gas under the oil cap. Not when the oil is new but within 2k miles it smells like gas. If this because gas seeps thought the pistons? Nether cars burn any oil..

Probably not unusual. There will always be some fuel in the oil. I notice the gasoline smell in my garage every time I change the oil in any car.

Its normal.

I just changed the oil in our Accord that ran for 5 hours idling and the oil smelled just like 'normal' oil that has lots of highway driving.

Check the pcv valve if you haven't already. It could be plugged and should be checked every oil change.

A clean pcv will rattle when shaken and air can be blown through it one way.

on the 95 it was replaced recently. the o7 just has 8k miles on it..

wouldn't a severe enough case be an indication of blowby? or would you start to see bubbling at that point?

You are smelling the results of blowby.
This is what gets past the rings in to the crankcase. Burned fuel and maybe a bit of burned oil, with some water vapor.
This is normal - I can smell subtleties in different engines - they have a peculiar smell to their used oil. Old VWs are a classic example.
But if you truly have liquid gas entering the crankcase, you do have a problem.

It was more prevalent in the old days of carburetors & mechanical fuel pumps leaking raw fuel into the engine-unless you have a fuel injector stuck wide open (& the misfiring & black cloud of smoke that accompany it), IMHO excess fuel is unlikely-could always have an oil analysis done by one of the FINE sponsors of this here website...
