Hey so I google this but I'm not getting a clear answer.

I bought a 2011 BMW 335is a few months ago. I did an oil change by putting the OEM stuff, which is Castrol Europeean formula with the BMW LL01 approval. I went with 0W-40 as it seems best to me that time.

0W-40 would provide good startup protection and when it warm good performacne right?

I'm ineterested in getting top tier oil for about 40$ more. I have 2 brand options, Liqui Moly 5W40 Leichtlauf Hi-Tec or Motul xcess something, that is also 5w40

Only thing that's avoiding me from pulling trigger is that 5W compared to 0W.

My owner's manual statesd 4 different oil grades and being BMW... you know they won't specefy smething specifally that wil llast a long time.

I do live in a cold area in the winter, I am in Ottawa Ontario but at the same time, it's not crazy blizzards and cold. Like the coldest it would get on a really cold cold day worst case I would say -30c . Usually it's ~ 20c.

So should I stick with Castrol euro oil 0w-40 or get a top tier that is 5w-40?

Liqui Moly 5W40 Leichtlauf Hi-Tec or Motul X-cess won't give you anything over Castrol 0W40, I would even say they are "inferior" (stricto sensu) oils.

Here (Europe) they are regarded as very average (Liqui Moly) and "not the best from Motul". But I know in the US it's something else. I'd stay with Castrol 0W40.

Another vote for Castrol 0w40. Here in the states at walmart, its also very cheap. Great oil. Enjoy it's titanium. (You can feel it as you drive !!! hee-hee)

Haha that's where I bought mine when I picked my parts in the states.

On the BMW forum people are sharing that because 0W-40 there is a wider viscoicity range it "shears" the oil over time and isn't as good?

I plan to oil change around 7500 miles.

There might be some truth to that if an owner is routinely tracking the car which I'm sure you're not. I would choose the 0w40.

Most of the 5w-40's are using thin Group III bases padded with VII. Castrol 0w-40 uses a good slug of PAO, so while it is also padded with VII to hit the visc target, it's likely no worse and in fact may be better than those 5w-40's in that regard.

Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w-40 sheared more in service than M1 0w-40 did for example. So it isn't as simple as just assuming because the spread is wider it is going to be more prone to shear.
