Hey guys, 1st post, WOW (deep breath, here I go). I have a 1989 Toyota P/U, 22RE, 4cyl, 5-speed, 2wd, w/ 100k miles. I am in Los Angeles, drive 1k-2k miles per month, lots of stop/go driving. OCI is about 4k miles. Owners manual specs an SL oil w/ multi-grade viscosity's of 30 or 40 wts. Am currently using Havoline 10w-40 conventional, that I bought lots of when Big Lots and Rite Aid were liquidating for $1-$2 per quart. Filter is the oversize Purolator Pure-one PL30001. But running low now. Does this engine require an SL oil or would I be able to use an SM oil such as Chevron's or Havoline's conventional that has Moly for anti-wear additive. Even thought of using the Delo 400 15w40 CJ-4. I am a fan of the entire Chevron line but would consider other recommendations. I have about 9 cases of Chevron conventional in various weights (5w30,10w-30,20w-50)from Kragen mail-in rebates. Thanks in advance for your profesional input. Bill

That 22RE engine is about as tough as they come, in your climate you can use just about any old oil and be fine. Chevron is a good choice for 4k OCIs, keep using it and be well. No problem using an SM oil.

SM fully supersedes SL, so you should be fine either way.

I second Pablo: you have a lot of flexibility because you live in a warm climate, and Delo 400 15w40 would probably work great for you.

How much towing do you do? For light duty use in the cooler months, the 5w30s and 10w30s would be fine, too.

Use up your $1 oil.
Any possible minor savings in fuel economy with a thinner oil would never be seen in the bottom line.
With a presumably tired engine in a warm climate, anybody's x-40 is OK.

dOOfOOd : No towing at all, at least til the friends find out i got this truck and need to move. (ha-ha)
mechtech2 : Engine should not be worn out. It has about 100k miles. It used to belong to my ex father in law and a lot of those miles were from being towed behind the motor home. He is not with us anymore and gone to that great RV site in the sky. It has got a lot of leaks and I am guessing they are from 20 year old seals/gaskets. Once the driveway is cleared of other projects, I plan on putting it jack stands, partially dis-assembling the front of the engine to check the all so common plastic chain guides that break and thus reseal what is accessable. Even with the oil leaks, oil consumption is about 1 qt/1000 miles. Thanks all. Bill

I don't like convential 10W40's. A 15W40 is a different story though, that would be a good choice I think. I had a 22RE and it just loved 10W30. I think I used a lot of Texaco/Chevron with it too. Since you don't have much oil consumption and just some leaks, how about a 10W30 High Mileage oil at least for awhile or till you fix the seals? I don't know if Chevron has one but Pennzoil and Valvoline have a good one. If that doesn't bring your oil consumption down, I'd go to a 15W40.

Cool. That means the xw-30 oils can be used, too. :)
