Oil looks good, why change it?

who's talking about 24K OCI's? He's talking about leaving the oil in for longer than 5K, on an engine that is notoriously easy on oil. 10K on this engine, in his climate with his driving habits using a quality GIII synthetic--that's not an 'extended OCI', that's normal (for his situation), and a very safe bet.

I also disagree that the oil's appearance 'goes both ways'. While dark oil may still be suitable for use, I've yet to hear of an instance of clear, clean oil not being suitable for use. If the oil is still clean, the additive pack is obviously still functioning as it should.

Indeed. And Thank you. Mentioning Amsoil and antichrist...in the same sentence.....AND saying people who do extended drains are whackos.....the whole bundle = way over the top.
I am standing by my point - that if a person is under warranty and the warranty requires a specific oil interval, and that person decides to extend the drain interval, then that person is a wacko. I am down with extended drain intervals and am trying to edge into a 10,000 mile OCI in my '01 Acura TL, but will use UOA to get there and will back off if this is not going my way. (the manufacturer wants the oil outta there at 7,500 miles.)

Now, when I see the Amsoil guys with their 24,000 mile posts, my question are about 1. Usage, 2. Whether the car has the oil volume and filtration capacity to hold the soot, dirt, unburnt fuel, etc. that come from this kind of mileage. I will accept that the oil and additives may still be working properly at these high mileages.


Can I take it your car is long out of warranty? I wouldn't hesitate to go 10K miles on any dino that meets the spec. On a high quality synthetic like AMSOIL Signature Series, or Mobil 1 Extended Performance and an extended drain oil filter, your car would be a perfect candidate for super long oci's. I agree with you about when under warranty to stick to the manufactures requirement.

Indeed, my car's warranty is a distant memory. My next change will be to Mobil ep, and is coming up in 200 miles. I am doing (my first) UOA and will see what the last 10,000 miles have done to this engine. The consensus is that the Honda/Acura V-6's are nice engines, but not as kind to oil as others. When you say "super-long oci's" what kind of mileage are you thinking?

My Prius is out of warranty although the engine has about 27K miles on it.

I just rolled over 5K and the oil change light is on. I'm thinking I'll leave it in for 7500 miles.

I picked up the new 0W30 and have a PureOne (I paid < $0.70 for it!) ready to go.

If the oil is still as clear at 7500 miles as it is now I'll burn it in my Diesel! That is a form of recycling and sticking with he Hybrid spirit.

PS: Did you check the oil with the engine 'cold'? Sometimes can affect the dipstick's oil color appearance at ambient tempts vs operating temps.

I have 8000 miles on this oil now. The oil still looks good. It is darker now but not really too bad. I can take a picture tonight if anybody still interested.

Do the blot test on a white paper towel or white index card, take a picture of the 'blot', and then another 1 hour later.
