Oil for 2021 Mazda CX-5 and Viscosity

The owner’s manual on my 2016 Mazda (same engine) says they recommend Castrol products, so perhaps the dealership uses bulk Castrol?

Any API approved synthetic 5w-30 is fine, but so is 0w-20 or 5w-20. These engines aren’t particularly tough on oils.
Owners manual on my 2018 recommends Castrol. I never use Castrol. I let dealer do first OC. They used Total bulk oil and a Mazda Value cheap filter. At least they over filled it to make me feel like I got a good deal.

Same here......
When I started with MZR engines I was using PP or PUP and it would use @ 1 qt. within an OCI.
I went to a 30wt CASTROL UERO and oil usage was gone. In my higher mileage 2.5 MZR I do blend in some 0/40. That MZR is as quiet as new and uses ZERO oil at almost 300k mi. at this point,

When we got our first SKYACTIVE 2.5 (CX-5) I started with the CASTROL UERO with excellent results, but I have since gone to AMSOIL in a 20wt to try and stretch out the OCI's a bit.
I am now over 75k mi on the CX-5 and I will be going to a 0/30, most likely the UERO AMSOIL.

LONG LIVE THE MZR!!

The MZR/Ford Duratec engines are awesome. Had one in a 2011 Fusion that I drove until 324,000 miles. 10,000 mile OCIs on 0W-20 and burned MAYBE 4-6Oz of oil in that time. Ran amazingly well until I had to junk the car for a bad transmission. Amazing engine.

Since you're NA, it states to use 0w20 if you care about warranty. 5w30 is only for the turbo version.

It states no such thing. Where does it say that grade is a warranty requirement? I see it’s “recommended” and is only required “to achieve optimum fuel economy.”

If that really worries you then I would think you would also be equally worried about the statement that it should be changed at an authorized Mazda dealer.

Well, If you are looking for something that says exactly that, then you won't find it. However, 0w20 is recommended for North America. This is what Mazda dealers will put in your non-turbo CX-5. You didn't know that you have to follow the manufacturer recommendations during the warranty period? Putting 5w30 instead 0w20 is not their recommendation and giving them a perfect reason to deny a claim since most things are black and white when it comes to that.

Not worried about that because:

But I suspect your next question will be: "where does it state that you "have" to use Mazda oil filter for warranty".

Now you’re just making stuff up.

Good thing my VW dealer didn’t know that when they used 504 00 oil instead of 508 00 in my Tiguan.

Oil grades are recommendations not requirements. Warranty is predicated on an oil that causes damage. That’s it. You’re doing them a favor by using a 30-grade here.

The engine is compatible with (and tested for) 0W-20 up to 10W-30 and anything in between. It’s Mazda North America which stipulates 0W-20 and that’s only because CAFE forces them to have that wording in the manual.

No one is going to have warranty denied for using 5W-30 in this application.
5W-30 will also not increase the likelihood of engine failure, likely the opposite.

Every Mazda dealer in Australia uses 10W-30 in these with no issues at all. Stress less

@Andya26 must be making that up too.

Like I said.

If you're not going to believe us, and you're not going to believe your owners manual, then go ask your dealer.
Just simply drive over there, and start a conversation with the service advisor, and ask them if Mazda has a history of denying engine warranty claims if an owner used 5W-30 in an engine that the manual and the oil filler cap recommend 0W-20.

Then do whatever the Mazda SA tells you to do.
He's the one that is going to submit your warranty claim to Mazda NA, and he will be the one to tell you what their decision is.

Try Mobil 1 5W30 EP 5 qrt jug from Walmart ($27), a Fram Tough Guard (silver) or Ultra (gold) oil filter (also from WM for $8 to $10) for a 5K mile / 12 month OCI (which ever comes first) .
