My wife has a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Touring with no turbo. We have been taking it to the dealer since new for 5K oil changes. I want to start changing the oil myself. What brand of oil is the dealership most likely using? They will not tell me. I have asked several times over the years. If it is not knowable, what brand of oil do you recommend?

Also, the oil cap calls for 0w20. The manual says that other countries use 5w30. Is it okay to move up to 5w30 for a little more protection? We live in North Texas where it is hot and doesn't get that cold.

I know you can probably use any oil and should stick to what is on the oil cap, but this is BITOG. Something to talk about anyway.

I run 0w-20 Amsoil SS. But I see winter temperatures and also it doesn’t, get driven hard. I do 7500miles/1 yr intervals.

I would run 5w-30. Exact type of oil is your option, and it won't matter a whole lot with 5k changes, but something like Penzoil Ultra Platinum is hard to beat for the cost.

Dealers use random bulk oil by the drum for customer pay work. Only warranty work gets Mazda oil :sneaky:

Get the cheapest synthetic on sale.

These engines are very easy on oil. Any name brand, full-synth, 5W-30 changed often will serve it well. Don’t overthink it with these Mazda non-turbo engines.

HPL PCEO 0w-20 or 5w-30.

Do you have the tools/supplies/equipment to change your oil?

It's not much, but can seem like a lot to procure if you're not used to doing such work.

Do you wrench? Get back to us.

The owner’s manual on my 2016 Mazda (same engine) says they recommend Castrol products, so perhaps the dealership uses bulk Castrol?

Any API approved synthetic 5w-30 is fine, but so is 0w-20 or 5w-20. These engines aren’t particularly tough on oils.

Just picked up my 2023 Mazda 3 from dealer today. 4,158 miles. It was the service loaner vehicle. They changed the oil and put in 5W-20 (says so on the sticker.). I'll run that to 6K then change again at 10K. Do 5K after that. Probably jump to 5W-30 also.

Yes, you can and should use 5w-30.
