Oil for 2021 Mazda CX-5 and Viscosity

Why bother with expensive oil like HPL to only go 5K? I'll have 8K this year on HPL and that will include 8 track days.
Because I want the best of the best, and that doesn’t necessarily mean I can roll out longer mileage, and just end up with a mediocre burned out oil in the end. I also have warranty concerns to contend with.

So you think HPL is a "mediocre burned out oil" putting more than 5K on it? I can tell you the oil I will remove at the end of this year will not be that.

I look at it this way. I get an oil that’s good for 5 k intervals and by the time that 5 k comes around, that oil is spent, and probably starting to cause more oil related funk (breakdown, varnish, etc) because it’s at its end. So now I use the HPL and I run it to, say, 10k. By that 10k, I’ll be in the same place I am with the earlier oil. So I have a couple options. Cheap oil, that works minimally, and I can change it out early, or use the HPL, which I know is better than the cheap oil, and still change it out a bit early, while it’s still at its peak. Hence why I asked earlier what OCI the HPL user is using on his.i also stated I had warranty concerns. I don’t need to try and justify to a dealer I use super quality oil, when all they are gonna do is look at the OCI….

I think your view of what oils are good for w/r to miles is a bit old-school. Any name-brand OTS oil can easily go 5K with plenty in the bank. HPL would be much more than that. I mean there are users here using HPL products for 20K+ miles and their engines look spotless and UOAs show the oil was still ok. 5K is "hold my beer" territory in 2024.

Perhaps old school, but I look at the difference in quality. A yugo might get me 5k, but a Mazda will do it much better, reliably, and safely. Especially if I beat on it.

I still don't see how a top-quality oil like HPL has issues in your mind past 5K, it goes against everything on this site w/r to HPL. whatever floats your boat for sure here, your car but that HPL is more than good for many more miles past 5K.

I’m sure it is. And I was curious enough to ask a person who drove the same vehicle as me what his OCI was, to debate going further .

I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 in my 2024 Mazda Miata Club and did an initial oil change to it at 850 miles and I am only currently at 3200 miles I plan to continue to run the 5w30 PUP here in North Carolina where I barely low temps.

Mazda wants 5K OCI with 0W-20 for NA CX-5.

I often see "20K" Miles Extended "Full Synthetic" oil or Euro oil for $24.xx / 5qt when on sale.
Also always see "10K" and some "20K" Miles Full Synthetic oil for ~ $20 / 5 qt.

Assuming you believe 50% of what they say, if you buy a "20K" miles oil meeting CX-5 oil spec which is so basic that even Mazola* Corn Oil may also meet, then you should definitely be good for the 5K miles intervals! No? Considering that NA CX-5 is known to be "easy" on oil.

* Intended for cooking only. Do not use in you engines. I have used it on the squeaky kitchen cabinet door hinges when I didn't want to make a trip to the garage and it does very well. 🤣

I used Valvoline Extended Protection 0W-20 for the first 30K in my Wife's 2022 CX-5 Skyactiv-G, but have switched to Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5W-30. I have always changed the oil myself on this car; it's a very easy car to change oil on.

I had a 2018 Mazda 6 with the same 2.5 NA engine in it. I ran 7500 mile oci with whatever 0W-20 full synthetic I could get at Walmart, and a couple 0w-40 Euro runs at the end. Did so for 80,000 miles and although I have 0 UOA to show, I never saw any difference in oil and the old oil never raised any alarms with me. The SkyActiv engines just don't care what you run in them.

This is BITOG man, you ran a 20 grade so clearly were on the cusp of total engine failure.
