Oil for 2008 XB with 2AZFE engine

My wife's 2008 Scion Xb currently has 114,000 miles on it. We've owned it since new. The first 35K miles or so it was Toyota oil and filters because it was free. Since then Mobil 1 or Pennzoil platinum in 5w20 and later 0w20. Almost always @ 5K OCI

At about 80K miles or so we noticed that it was consuming oil (we noticed this when she was backing out of the driveway and the oil light flashed when she stopped, parked car and checked oil to find dipstick dry) Since then it's been averaging about .5 quart / 1000 miles oil consumption.

It's coming up due for it's next change @ 115K miles. The last oil change I used Mobil 1 5W30 High Mileage oil. I was hoping it would help with the oil consumption but still about .5 quarts /1000 miles.

Is there any oil I can use that will help reduce consumption? I changed the PCV @ 100K
Should I stick with synthetic or go back to dino? We would like to see 200K out of this car since we just replaced my Altima with a 14 Pathfinder and don't want a second car payment.

That consumption is normal. You can try 0w30 or 5w30. I would just add the oil and forget about it.

My wife's 05 rav 2az was near dead at 57K miles - running the best oil I could find and factory filters. Too bad - it was a sweet engine when new - porsche like.

Whats the issue?

I'd go back to conventional or synthetic blend like MaxLife or similar, might help with the consumption some too.

I had the exact issue in my Scion tC previous to my Camry. Around 85k miles I started to lose oil at about your same rate, nothing dramatic, just didn't like knowing it was burning any! I used 5w-20 up until said 85k miles, then switched to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and noticed an ever do slight decrease in consumption. Unfortunately, it's a known issue with these Toyota 4 cylinders. Other than that, it's a great engine. Just step up to a 30wt and add as necessary, and you will easily get 200k.

I think no one mentioned it beause the OP said PCV was replaced at 100k.
I'd use cheapest High Mileage like maxlife, defy, or even STHigh Mileage or MSHigh Mileage.
Or a High Mileage oil that's on sale, and top it off .

my apologies for not being specifically clear about this:

PCV valve, being on the dirty end of the feedback loop, must be serviced (at least take it out and spray-clean it with carb cleaner) within the first 2 years of the new car/engine in service to ensure proper metering of the dirty fumes doesn't go out of wack.

From that time on: do so every 1.5 yrs or so (either pull it out and clean it, or replace it with a factory OEM unit).

Your engine will last much, much longer.

my wifey's camry (2AZFE) is now @ 185k, no oil burning/consumption issues throughout it's 5k run of regular conventional oil. just like all other vehicles I serviced: every 1.5yrs, you clean the PCV valves.

To those whose engine already started burning oil due to stuck control rings (due to clogged PCV valves), you best hope is to use some form of cleaners in your crankcase and see if it helps in reducing oil consumption.

Sounds to me like that 2.4 was never properly broken in.

Given your oil choices, it may still not be.

Next oil change, go with a dino fill in 5w30 flavor and run it HARD. 6k rpm from.every red light.

People are way to easy on new or built motors these days...

When I build a motor, I heat cycle, then thrash the [censored] out of it. Change my oil early, and then it's good for whatever.

Too late for ring bed-in now, that's the first hour of operation.
Maybe a piston soak if gummed Oc rings - but, they can get toasted though once they gummed up and loose proper oil flow and they be dead.

Agree that people baby their engines to DEATH.

Get yourself some Maxlife 10w30. Run it hard. Change it at 3k. Repeat.

With some luck, you'll see reduced consumption after the third change.

Toyot a had a TSB about oil consumption on the 2az. They said that the pistons in certain engines were improperly manufactured, causing oil consumption. so basically this is normal for this engine. If it were still under warranty you could contact Toyota about it and they would send you in for an oil consumption test at a dealership. But .5 Quart every thousand miles would be within their normal range. We've got an 08 xb, and it also costumes some oil.

the 2AZ-FE has the same issue as the 1ZZ-FE of having clogged oil return holes in the piston but not to the same extent because it has more oil return holes. They are eventually bound to burn oil from design flaw, not because they were not properly broke in or not.

99 prizm went until 260k before suddenly burning oil
06 camry went until 160k before suddenly burning oil

both were on 3-4k dino OCI before burning oil.

in fact during rebuild (of 1zz-fe) quite a few people have reused the old piston rings with success, they hold good compression even at really high mileage.

So it has nothing to do with not being properly broke in or seating of the piston rings, though I do agree with breaking in the car hard after an engine rebuild and then doing an oil change rather sooner then later, as I have done that with great success.

Thanks for all the replies.

The engine has been run pretty hard most of it's life. My wife has a bit of a lead foot.

So as long as I keep up with putting oil in it and can get 200K plus miles I'm happy with it. I guess the High Mileage oils will do nothing since it's not the valve stem seals. I watched her crank it up this morning after sitting all night and not a puff of smoke.

I wish I knew about PCV earlier. I'll make sure I take care of it on my pathfinder.

5w30 syn would be/is my choice (PP) for the 2AZFE engine and I would go a couple of OCIs before any final determination of oil consumption...

A very reasonable "loss" would be 1/2 quart per 4-6k miles....Kitacam goes from F to L on the dipstick (1 quart) over about 6-8k miles depending on the type of miles driven.

Yeah I'll keep synthetic in it. Not that much more than Dino buying it 5 quarts at a time from Walmart. I'll just have to make sure I keep it full of oil.

You'd be surprised, or maybe not, how many people don't ever check oil levels...I do believe, and I'm not alone, that 5w30 "lasts longer" (burns off) less than 0w-20...
