Hey guys, Im new here but have been lurking around and appreciate everyone contributing for us to be better informed on which oils are best!

Ive read a lot of good stuff and reviews here and on other sites about the Esso XD-3 0W-30 full synthetic motor oil.

I am thinking of using this on my newly acquired 2006 Chrysler 300 with the 3.5L V6 (which recommends 10W-30), along with a Napa Gold (Wix) filter, and plan to have the OCI for about 6,000 KMS or 6 months whichever comes first (I dont drive much)... 50/50 highway/city... In the summers mostly highway.
Im located in Toronto (Canada).

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks all !!

The XD-3 products botht he 0W30 and the 0W40 have always turned in great UOA results in everything we have seen them in. If I lived in Canada it would be the oil I would be useing!

Welcome to bitog :)

I will cut in how is Esso 0w30 vs SSO 0w30 ?

I would like to use it in my Mazda 3 .. speced. for 5w20

SSO at 100C is 10.3 XD3 is 12.2 Is that a lot thicker ?

Your car specs. 10W-30. Use that viscosity to avoid warranty troubles. If there is no warranty, then use whatever you feel like, BUT: XD-3 is major, major overkill at 6k km intervals. Unless you are going to move to a 20k km interval, just use dino. It will also save you mucho money.....

Hi there,
thanks for the info guys...

The reason I chose to do it at that time is because of the oil filter. I would extend the OCI longer as I dont drive much but I understand that the filter needs replacing before?

Lets say instead of changing the oil and filter at the same time, can I just replace the filter and keep the oil since it will be good? Or is the filter (Wix) good enough to keep in for about 1 year / 15k kms and change at the same time as the oil?

Thanks all!

XD-3 0W-30 is tough like a heavy duty oil, has the cold temperature performance that beats almost anything out there and is similar to German Castrol or Amsoil SSO. It's very much in the same category, but only $6 per litre rather than $10+.

I used it in my car for severe service in the winter at 10,000 km intervals with good results. It would start easy with no noise, unaided at -37.

The CJ-4 stuff may not be as good as the CI-4 stuff, but if it is even half as good, I would change no sooner than 10,000 km.

+1

It's an outstanding oil, with no question about it's primary PAO basestock as it's fully disclosed in the literature. The UOA results and specifications also happily support it's quality, despite how much of a trend it's now become to diminish UOA results as a last ditch effort to patronize certain other porducts. I can only wonder how the Imperial Oil division of EM is so different from another.

Sorry I have never heard of the CJ-4 and CI-4 term before? Are they different forms of the oil? Newbie question lol.

Thanks

Hi,
Max_Wander - I endorse your comments about XD3 0W-30 and especially about EM's Divisions. One wonders..............

However your said this too:

"The UOA results and specifications also happily support it's quality, despite how much of a trend it's now become to diminish UOA results as a last ditch effort to patronize certain other porducts."

For some decades before and ever since I have been a BITOG Member (and as an active practicioner) I have cautioned against the use of simple single pass UOAs as a measure of engine wear rates.
This especially so as a engine wear performance measure of "one oil against another". Some people appear to get into an orgasmic frenzy over wear metal differences of only a few ppm from "end on end" UOAs with different lubricants - objectivity and reality are often lost! Such UOAs are simply spurious in these circumstances

UOAs are excellent when used as a tool to monitor a lubricant's (and perhaps and engine's) condition!

I for one don't "patronise certain other products".

Can it still be had for $6 per litre?

I just got a 12L case (12 X 1L) for $5.75/L from the local esso distributor... I like the price compared to other oils that go for like $10/L

Maybe a dumb question that I forgot to ask the person there, but are the bottles 1L or 1 Quart? Because my car calls for 6 Quarts (5.7L). On the bottle it says 1Litre, but just want to make sure with the people who used it on here. Gosh this is embarrassing (lol).

And I am going to do the oil change before the real cold comes, in maybe a week or two along with a Wix oil filter, and plan on keeping it in for approx 10,000km. (Does time matter or should I strictly go by km even if the winters are harsh)?

Thanks alot for the insightful info all :)

I Live in Richmond Hill (North of Toronto) and used to be able to order the XD3 0W-30 from a local Napa store. Not anymore. Now, I'd have to drive downtown to Noco.

Are there any other options?

Also, how is the Castrol 0w-30 different from the XD3 (price and quality-wise)?

Thanks,
Alex.

I change my oil (Conklin Convoy) once/year, and change the filter once in between oil changes. Then I just top off the oil.

Wix filters (what I'm using, too) are excellent, and may be able to handle the entire OCI using the same filter, but changing it once gives me peace of mind.
