Oil + filter hoarders

I don't believe in stockpiling oil. The manufacturers state oil has a limited shelf life. But I'm guilty of stockpiling oil filters till the last time I bought a case of Toyota filters for my truck. I did the math and found that case will outlive me :(
My concern with stocking filters is that we've seen bad runs of filters from Purolator, Wix, Fram, etc, and if you have a dozen "tear-o-lators" then now it becomes a waste.

My current stash stands at 338 quarts, down from an all-time high of 343. These photos are a partial representation, most of it is hidden in large cardboard boxes. strategically placed all over the garage. All purchased at deeply discounted prices, some with rebates. Estimate average price paid about ~$1.43 per quart.

I use 16 qts/year in my 3 cars. I'm all set for 20 years. But I will likely sell some during the next oil crisis after prices inflate.
How can you be sure you’ll have those exact cars in 10 or 20 years though? Life can be very unpredictable. Like if you had told me 20 yrs ago I’d have a hybrid minivan spec’d for 0W16 I would’ve called you insane. Also you don’t get any of the benefits from formulation changes or advances like the up coming API SQ.

Nice @ProbeGT

Current oil barge is at 303 quarts. Its been also mostly from sales/rebates/clearances the past 18 months. It will all be used in one way or another, close friends, OPE, and have my sights on a big diesel project in the next 2-3 years where a few buckets will swallowed in a single change.

10 years ago I had the same 3 cars. Sure, any one of them could get totalled on any given day. But so what. I can run this oil in most cars on the road today. My stash is diversified, ranging from 0W20 to 10W40. I currently have no use for 0W20 but in time I will likely acquire a newer car to run it in. I will never use 0W8 or 0W16. Even in a brand new Camry I'd run 0W20.

As far as newer API specs like SQ , that bears zero significance to me. As a matter of fact, API SL was far superior to API SN/SP in some ways (ZDDP), especially for my current cars which specifically call for API SL and are not compatible with later API specs due to antiwear additive limits imposed by API SM and later. Fortunately, many oils in my stash still carry the API SL label including the brand new M1 0W40!

I've been running "tear-o-lators", sometimes for 2 OCI, from a WM clearance a long time ago, on my dad's 3.5L van without incident. I just removed the very last one recently. I even started a thread about them back in 2016. SuperTech 5w-20 was used most of the time (Spec is 5w-30), and oil changes were under $10 for last 8 years, because I bought cases of oil when WM had them for $6 a jug; and I still have plenty left.

You know who you are. Let's see those proud stashes of fresh full jugs of virgin oil, those crates and boxes overflowing with oil filters. Proudly display your oil & filter acquisition disorder (OFAD) symptoms! 😂
If you hoarded early Fram Ultra oil filters - you were very smart .

If I buy filters and stash them, and others find they tear, I'm an engine ahead by letting others experiment for me.

My stash is actually spread throughout my garage, garage attic, and basement. A secret plan so my wife doesn't know about my problem.
Oil filters anonymous? You got to be a friend of Bill, 12 steps, make sure you admit to yourself another human being of your wrongdoings. Get you a sponsor.

I have been trying hard to stop the madness of stockpiling. I do find it causes premature oil changes when bored. It does take up space I need to stay organized with other tools, and the stockpile worthy deals on oil in Canada aren’t hugely better than the sale prices offered.

Fuel is also tied to oil prices and we don’t stockpile it for obvious reasons. All it would take is one really bad oil container leak onto something expensive to wash away any of your savings.
