Sorry but I have been using Pure One filers on my kids Rav4 for 4 years with no problems. Oh, I cut one open and it was not crushed at all like that picture. But I am using the filter for the 4 cyl engine.

Sure, the photo is real ... but as I said, the "collapse" is not from being "too restrictive to flow". It's because the filter is probably a little longer than it should be. This has been an issue with other manufacturers too ... the cartrige filter either gets slightly curshed in length and/or gets twisted about the center axis when installed and cap tightened down. It has nothing to do with flow restriction.

Agreed, but in no way is the wrong size/bad fit acceptable. Its a sign of poor quality control and bad design. Ironically the Fram cartridge has no issues, but whos going to defend them? Also it appears people are confusing spin-ons and cartridge filters.

No, it's not acceptable. Others have reported similar issues with other brands of cartridge filters, which seem to have more issues with fitment than spin-ons (obviously).

Issues like this should be reported to the manufacturer so they can investigate and rectify the issue. In the mean time, use brands that you know work ... it's a free country (so far),

That's because spin-on filters are way more common than cartridge filters, so when someone starts talking about oil filters but don't specify they are talking about a cartridge filter, the reader will assume it's a spin-on. Posters need to say they are talking about a cartridge filter if that's what they are talking about.

I know many older camry v6 and avalon use 90915-yzzd1.. The chart say yzzg1. whats the different??? maybe they are same ?
 
The filters are microcosoms of the car.

Toyotas are small, precise, high quality
German ones are non user friendly
American ones are all over the place in terms of quality
 
That P1 filter probably collapsed from 65k miles oci it looks like it saw!

I thought anyone who chose to comment on this thread would be familiar enough with the 3.5L Toyota engine to know it has a cartridge filter. My bad..

The purolator cartridge filters are good filters, but in the Toyota and Lexus applications, the filter has what looks like a felt like material on the top and bottom of the filter. This extra material causes the filter to deform slightly after tightening the cartridge. At least it did with two I tried.

Best to use either the Toyota/Lexus filter, or the Fram cartridge filter which appears every bit as good as the Toyota
cartridge filter.
 
Last time I priced the aftermarket cartridge filters for Toyota's 3.5L, there were more than 2x the OEM cost.

I thought the only benefit from aftermarket filters was lower price?

Keep in mind that a lot of engines one model year might use a spin-on, then the next model year switch to a cartridge ... even though it's basically the same engine. Trying to keep track (unless you own the specific vehicle) is virtually impossible.
 
I've read the same and also wonder about their filtration ability. One of the reasons I'm not sold on cartridge filters...they really limit your ability to upgrade. Synthetic media has proven to be much more effective in filtration (particle count analysis ) and there really aren't any cartridge filters available for the application.
