Best Oil Filter Make/Model for Lexus ES 300?

I have a 96 ES 300 I've just purchase in mint condition. It's been regularly service (have all records) and doesn't appear to be a sludege engine. Doesn't smoke at start-up and doesn't burn oil.

Because the engine is prone to sludging and the fact that is has 105K miles, I'm going to do an exhaustive RX Auto clean out.

Can folks comment on what brand/model of oil filter they would use for this car and why?

I have a '97 Camry. It's a 4 cylinder, so not a perfect example, but I've been using a Purolator Premium Plus (part #L14476). It's a $2.50 or less filter when you catch it on sale @ Pep Boys. (regular $4.99 I think).

No problems with startup noise, which was my big concern. Also, Purolator has a pretty good rep in BITOG.

If the Lexus were mine, my filter choices would be (in order of personal preference):

Mobil 1
Purolator Pure One
Wix
OEM
Fram Extra Guard

As far as the "why" is concerned, my choices are simply my personal preferences.

Running one on the 96 Saturn, hasn't blown up yet.

Actually:
1) Supertech ST3614
2) Napa ProSelect
3) Purolator Premium Plus

All are good choices for short, 3-5K drains.

If you want to experiment a little, the numbers for your filter via Wixfilters is

3.4 tall by 2.9 wide

2.734 2.430 0.226

at 3/4 by 16 and 8-11 BPV setting


The FL1A, which crosses with about 50 million filters
is 5.178 tall and 3.6 wide
has the same thread and BPV setting, with a gasket that shows

2.834 2.462 0.200

If you think there is room, might be a better filter to try. If there is room for that, and you think there is more room, check this thread
