Oil filter for '04 Honda Pilot

Hi everyone,i'm confused as in why did Honda go to this minuscule oil filter for a car that has a 3.5 L engine ?,what i did i compared the cross reference oil filter for an '03 and it's bigger than '04 !,go figure .I think oil filters are made for engines that have certain compresion and stuff,right ?,so what will happen if i were to use an '03 size oil filter for my '04 Pilot ?,or better yet what if i were to buy an oil filter that's the huggest size that i can fit,would that potencialy cause problems ?
On my '04 Honda Pilot i installed the dealed size filter and the mount/spin on place is bigger than the darn filter,i never seen anything like that before,the filter is way to small,it does fit ok but why hot use bigger ?,any Honda techs here ?

Settle down. Haveyou ever cut open an oil filter or even looked at the pictures here of them? Even quality brands have lots of empty space in the older numbers. Empty spece in general under the hood of cars is becoming an endangered species. I cut open a tiny Mazda OEM filter, anf found more filter area that in some much larger filters. There is the difficult to evaluate matter of quality of the media too. The small filter may have as good or better flow and efficiency as a larger one.

Ulei, I have the same engine my Saturn Vue as you have. I thought it seemed a bit small as well. But the WalMart Supertech 7317 filter works just fine for $2 in this car, small or not. I have a few UOAs posted on this vehicle if you search the UOA section.

labman,it's ok.I understand the fact that the "realstate" under the hood of today's modern cars is scarce but i'm only concerned with the fact that the manufacturer's may short hand us,after all to make a smaller package may cost less than a larger one...,i do want to get the most out of my car and oil and filtration are too important to me not to be concerned.

You might do a search on "PL24458".
This is what I use on my 04 Odyssey with the 3.5L.

I have a 04 Pilot and I use a K&N HP1010. I use the same on my Accord and my mothers Civic Hybrid.
The Bosch 3323 is also a very good filter.

I think the Pilot started with a larger filter and then "evolved" to the smaller filter that is the standard filter for all Honda's.

Hamp makes a premium filter and in both the large and small sizes for Honda's. Im not 100% certain that these larger filters will fit a Pilot but you might want to order one and give it a try.

Perhaps an experienced BITOG member can give us some advice as to whether the larger filter will fit the 03/04/05 Pilots.

The Maxima specs a small go kart filter as well. As for small filter, go with the Bosch 3323 or the NAPA Gold 1356.

I use the NAPA Gold 1334 on both my Maxima and my wife's 2004 Odyssey. This filer is an about an inch/2.5 cm shorter than the above referenced filters but is much wider. The 1334 has the same threads and the gasket diameter identical the narrower filters. The Odyssey specs the 1334 by the way.

Have you also considered the 1344? It appears to be the same as the 1334 except the 1344 is about 0.9 inches longer.

Yes, I have considered the 1344. The only reason I have not used the longer 1344 is the slight difference in the diameter of rubber gasket. The 1344 is the same length as the 1356.

The Wix filter is the 51334 and is the same as the NAPA Gold if Wix is easier for one to find.

The actual measured gasket diameters were identical on the 1334 and 1344 I compared.

Even the thickness appeared to be the same, although I didn't take them off to measure because I was going to use the 1344.

Looks like they don't always follow their catalog dimensions.

You are correct. In the metro Atlanta NAPA store, the 1344 is harder to find. Some location have them behind the parts guy counter and some do not. I did not want to recommend it since I have not used it myself.

The difference that I noticed in the gasket when comparing the two about 6 months ago was maybe a centimeter or 2/5 of inch. The thread is exactly the same. I will have to try the 1344 on my Maxima at the next OCI.

Purolator 24458 (L and PL) is the equivalent to the 1344, and is widely available.

Which big autoparts chain stores carry Purolator?

I want to try that one next, the Napa 1344 was couple of $ more than a 1334 and was in a dusty box, I guess they were charging me a storage fee for the time it sat in the stores back room

Thanks Labman, I checked the Sear Auto Center about 10 miles away, they only carried the regular L24458, the ****** tried to tell me that was the best Purolator filter and that I shouldn't be changing my oil myself. Reminded me why I haven't been in a Sears auto center in 10 years.

Pepboys worked out better, I called and they have the PL24458 in stock in their nearest store about 15 miles away. I also ran across an up to $6.49 rebate coupon for Purolator filters

There is a Harbor Freight store about 2 blocks from the Pep Boys, so I will turn this into a bottom feeder trip.

Another possible option is the Purolator L20253. This is the filter for the ZR-1 Corvette. It's even larger than the PL24458. The only question is whether or not the gasket will seal. I'm going to test this on my next oil change for our Honda Odyssey. It fits my '89 Mazda MX-6 GT.

I really like oversized filters. Increased flow is good!

back on topic: Sears seems to be about the only purolator reseller that doesn't have Pure Ones. If you have a Pep boys or Advance Auto they should have it. They even have sales once and a while.
