Just wondering and dont know if this is the correct section. If it is I apologize. What happens to all the used oil filters, fuel filters, and coolant filters and trans filters? I know SAFETY KLEEN takes all of ours and does not charge us, but what happens to them after SAFETY KLEEN takes them? I would imagine they recycle the steel out of them, but could they take remaining oil and atf out of them? Other question is this; I have around 2 3/4 gallons of honda anti freeze(blue dyed) that I need to dispose of since I flushed my engine, and drained and refilled the whole system(including the block drain or engine). Who will take anti freeze? Advance said they dont take it and Autozone said no also. Didnt ask NAPA yet. Thank you very much in advance.

Glcol is readily "eaten" by bacteria. If you flush it into a sewage system, it won't even make it to the treatment plant but will be turned to CO2 and water by the time it gets there. Adds like phosphate , however, are persistent and cause problems in bodies of water like algae growth.

For small amounts, the sewage route is reasonable from an environmental standpoint. Larger amounts should be taken to a recycler if you can find one.

I was just talking to my brother about this. He had a garage with a waste oil heater. Aside from regularly draining off the sludge so it doesn't foul the heater, the subject of ATF came up. He said ATF burns real good. If they did a transmission oil change or two in the winter it would be nice and toasty warm in the garage until the ATF worked it's way through the waste oil heater.

Yeah my old workplace in Beaver PA (bout 20 min from me), takes old cooking oil, motor oil, gear oil, brake fluid etc. Was always nice and warm there. I hear the ATF burns REALLY HOT too.
