A reason not to pre-fill an oil filter

I performed an oil filter only change today with only 2710 miles on the filter, and if you’re curious to know why, go ahead make my day by asking.

Anyhow, as I said, one reason why not to prefill an oil filter and it is not what you think. That’s why it’s in this Off Topic category.

I decided to prefill for a 2007 rav4 because the oil filter is position exactly upside down. No spillage as so I thought. Well for whatever reason it spilled. And messed up my wool sweatshirt and polo underneath. Doh!

I actually don’t recall ever prefilling it. And if I did, it wasn’t that much. The filter was a Wix 57145, replacing an STP S4967 shorty. I think I wanted to prefill it this time because of the filter only change. But if I ever did prefill, I sure didn’t make such a mess. Or maybe I wasn’t wearing normal wear.

Question now is, how difficult will it be to remove/clean off 5w-30 Valvoline Restore and Protect from said clothing? I sprayed some Shout it out detergent. Let’s see what happens. View attachment 310731View attachment 310732
I have an "oil change" outdoor type shirt. If it gets dirty I wash it with "oil chnage" sweatpants. When clean they go into garage for next oil change.

Have been changing in my cars and company vans that i drove for over 60 years. For the last 35 synthetic. Changes oil in my service truck at 4- 5k and changed oil in personal cars 2-3 all at the same time. Always bought WM cheap filters or like premium or store brand syn oil. Never pre oiled a filter. Drove most of them well over 100k.

Original Gunk, not the foaming stuff, will take oil and hydraulic fluid stains out of clothes. Only problem is the Gunk smell remains for several washes but eventually clears up.

Update and closure. Good news folks. It appears to have worked. I really think what helped was the fact that the Valvoline Restore and Protect was virgin and not used. Some cleaning action from the Valvoline Restore and Protect itself (cough-cough).

I used Shout spray right away and added water, wring it a bit and allowed it to soak. A few days later, I added regular Dawn dish detergent with water, wring it a bit and again allowed it to soak. A few days later, wring some more with water, then dropped it into the regular wash.

The results…

I used to come home smelling like JP-5 everyday and my wife made me change clothes in the garage. We had an old washing machine hooked up out there because I wasn't allowed to bring my dirty cammies into the house or stink up the regular washer she used. :ROFLMAO:

I was on a surface ship, but heard my fellow submariners burned their clothing. In other words, the stank is unwashable and simply thrown away.

If you add a 20z bottle of coke to the washing machine it clears out the jet fuel smell. Not sure why.

I remember those days well. I always kept a change of civvies in my locker for those days we had fuel system maintenance.

I came here to ask if the name was pre-stain or if it was changed post-stain.
Here’s the proof,

I didn't read page 2, so I have no idea if this has been mentioned, but...

If you spilled Valvoline Restore and Protect on your clothes have no worry. Its the only oil on the market that will clean ring packs, so its already got all the detergent you need!!!

Or - you'll always look good on your next oil changes.
And so it washed out after using Dawn. I am no longer “Stained.”

my old VW with the CCTA engine had the filter upside down also. Never spilled oil when I pre-filled it. The trick is pre-fill, wait until the media allows the oil to pass through into the empty side, then pour off the excess (use some of the excess to lube the gasket), and then install.

Always EZ-peezy to do an oil change..... except for the one time when the adapter remained on the engine when I removed the filter.
