A reason not to pre-fill an oil filter

Oil changed same vehicle today. Did not pre-fill the oil filter today. And I still made a mess. @OilStained my driveway. The oil plug dropped into the funnel. Thinking nothing of it, the funnel overflowed. The oil plug perfectly positioned itself thread side down. What will I oilstain next?

Thats a bad feeling is it not? oil can have a mind all its own...
Not that long ago, I drain my Harley oil into my Harley low profile drain pan, not sure exactly what went wrong but I only removed 1 of the 2 orange drain plugs and I guess air was trapped? ALL I know is ALL my oil was on my driveway and not in my drain pan.

I do however always keep a large bag of old school clay Cat litter for times such as this!

I'm sure plenty of DIY'ers have made a mess over the years. I'm guilty of it many times, be it engine oil, ATF, or coolant. Never had the luxury of a lift or a pit to make things easier. Haven't made a mess in awhile,,I'm overdue. The absolute worst mess I made is when I double gasketed an oil filter when I was a youngin. Four qts of new oil pumped out on concrete. Never made that mistake again. Oh well, clean up and move on. No pics of all the spills,,,,too busy cleaning up. Muriatic acid and a garden hose got the concrete pretty clean.

I think a fair number did the stuck filter gasket fun … 😵‍💫

I put down 1 - 2x painters plastic, doubled over. Cardboard doesn't cut it as a safety.

Those type of oil drain pans with no sides to contain splashing, are a disaster waiting to happen. Once the plug comes out, it's like a cow peeing on a flat rock.

Hey , it is like the "rich man" who came up with the slogan said...... "STUFF HAPPENS!"
By the way. I have removed nearly every type of stain from clothing with no special products. Just simple Dawn dishwashing liquid.

Ouch. I have large pieces of cardboard for the crazy things that can happen. Lol
