Using a smaller oil filter.

Our Toyota takes the ph3614 size oil filter.
My jeep takes the ph16 size filter.

Both are 4.0L engines. One is an inline 6 and the other is a v6.

The v6 makes power at higher rpm and calls for the ph3614 filter .

The online 6 has more torque where it seems like it's lugging.

Neither does extend oil change intervals.

Both filters are identical except for can size and I assume the amount of filter paper in them.
Any reason not to use the ph3614 size filter where the ph16 goes?

Yes it will. But when the car sits a few days the filter drains down. When started the timing chain and vvt rattle until the filter fills with oil. Only then does those parts get pressured oil and get quiet
The smaller filter fills much faster and the start up rattles do not happen.
Sounds like (literally) there's at least one reason to continue using the smaller filter, although the amount of time for it to fill is probably much quicker than perceived.

No real good reason, unless you do extended OCIs then the larger filter might make more sense for increased holding capacity. Both engine probably have a pretty similar oil pump output near redline, so what engine the filter is on wouldn't matter much.

I've had a 07 Toyota 1GRFE v6 w/inverted oil filter for 16+ yrs &, w/240k miles, and NEVER had a rattle at startup (or anytime).
I always run a 2x larger XG8A, or PBL30001, or FG LF3487 etc.

Chris I use the Toyota yzzd1 that crosses to 3614 on Dakota often. Use with confidence

How long does yours sit between startups? Ours will sometimes sit a week or more.
We got it used with 151k on it. And no service history.

Currantly about 227k.

The 3614 is the specified size for my Tacoma V6, but I use the larger 3600 sized filters. If a 3614 sized filter can support a 4.0L V6 then it can support about anything if the OCI is normal.
