More filter consolidation (Walmart)

Looks like my beloved old Nissan and not-so loved Lexus take the same filter, PH3614. They are doing away with the PH3682 (Nissan app). Of course, this is Walmart and the 3682 (equivalent) is still available elsewhere. Hard to believe they are essentially the same specification in all aspects, but what do I know as I'm only a keyboard oil filter expert. I won't be using the 3614 on my Nissan because...well, what took them so long to consolidate them if they are the same?

I don't know what they are waiting for, but they need to get rid of the 7317 because the 6607 are both exactly the same except for the can size.

The 7317 application is a very popular used by Honda/Acura, Infiniti, Nissan, Cat and others, perhaps a consideration. While the 7317 ~3/4" longer than 6607, the increase in media area is still significant.

When I first looked at image I was unclear if just WM ACC/(TLE) or WM shelf stock too. In the past Super Tech OF have consolidated the 7317 to the shorty 6607. The Wix made ST consolidated the 9688 size to the 7317. If it was just the WM ACC, consolidation with downsizing has been popular with quick lubes and some indies for some time now. Saves on inventory and costs. So, WM ACC not unique in filter consolidation.

However, on closer inspection I see TG/XG included in image, 'it seems' WM has decided to reduce Fram off the shelf inventory as well. If true, that is a somewhat surprising move away from stocking spec Fram OFs.

I would (and do) pick a 7317 over a 6607 any day. I don't like the consolidation of the 7317 to the 6607 size that many manufacturers are doing.
I just like the bigger size of the 7317, not that it probably makes any real difference in my intervals.

I also would rather have a 9688/3593a over the 7317, but that is a little too fat to fit on my Goldwing easily, so the 7317 size is what I use.

The xx4386 was the equivalent of a -yzzF1 filter. It is slightly larger than the -YZZN1 and was limited to 2AZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engines, both of which have been out of production for more than 10 years. For functionality purposes, the 4967 works fine but will reduce the oil capacity very slightly.

I am surprised that they have not killed the 3593A filters. Honda was the main user of that size and has superseded all of the 3593A size fitments to 7317 anyway.

They have! :sneaky:

I had a Nissan, no bypass valve on the 3682, bypass is in the engine. So now you will have two bypass valves, or buy the correct filter elsewhere.
Do you have the standpipe on the filter mount? If so the 3614 is probably too short. The 3600 is long, the 3682 is just right.

The 4386 is the SAE thread equivalent of the metric 7317 application. Somewhat longer than the 4967 but I venture to say, not as popular an application as the 7317.

As for 9688 vs 3593A, Fram is one of the few, perhaps only that separates the applications. Other manufacturers just combine the two in one application. If you look at the Fram specs for the two, the bypass psi specs read slightly differently. As discussed here before, keeping them separate may have something to do with Hyun/Kia (9688) having issues they've blamed on aftermarket filter use.

Doesn't the 9688 need a special bypass rating for Hyundai/Kia? Does the 7317 have the same bypass setting? IIRC the 9688 was added by Fram due to initial problems with their existing filter on Hyundai/Kia. I don't recall which filter the 9688 replaced.

Hope that doesn't happen. I think Fram would be hurting sales if they did that because IMO a lot of people would go buy a different brand that specs a larger sized filter than the 6607.

AFAIK, the 3682/51368 filter is the Nissan VG/GA and older Subaru filter. The last things that used it were the older Quest and Frontier unless Nissan switched them over to metric studs. The 3593A was the old Honda and Mitsu/Hyundai filter. Fram’s probably doing this to align with Champ - who has consolidated filters for quick lube/private labels.

And not too many of those cars are around still - Fram hasn’t “downsized” the 3600 to be the same size as the FL400S.
