I been doing some oil filter investigations and I finally got around to hacking some filters used in my car for the Fram/ST 7317, Purolator PL14610, Wix 51356 size.

The first is a Supertech 7317. I bought it when I first came to this forum based on the hype it was getting and that it was a bargain at $1.77. Too bad it's not a bargain at all with it's filter area of 62 sq in. That's just pathetic. I also was able to use a can opener to split the can open. Everything else about it was fine.

Next is an OEM Nissan 15208 65F01 that may have been dealer installed in my car. It was tiny, but it contained enough filter area at 102 sq in. Twice the ST! To my suprize, it looked like it was made by Fram. It has cardboard end caps and a leaf spring for the bypass value. This became my basis for the minimum quality that Infiniti/Nissan would require for the recommended oil change interval of 3750-7500 miles. Interestingly enough, this filter was replaced with a different model number.

Finally is the Purolator Premium Plus. I was impressed. The bypass value actually had an expensive and robust looking spring setup and the filter area was 115 sq in. Contrary to previous reports, mine came with no string around the filter element. It's quite a bargain when it goes on sale and can be had for a little over $2.

From other reports around the web, the Proline (a budget Purolator equivalent) should have slightly less filter area and a Purolator PUREOne should have more. I think I know what filter to try next after I change my oil in a week or two. By then I'll have a Fram Tough Guard 7317 opened up along with another 4 filters in the Fram/ST 3593a size. More to come. . .

P.S.

Thank you. Interesting post. The OEM filter supports my assertion that you can't judge a filter by its exterior size. I am surpassed ST did so poorly. In other applications it does much better.

In using a can opener to open filters, are you using the standard gear and handle type and cutting the heavy base plate? Can you turn it and run around the shell?

Doesn't flow rate vary inversely with the amount of filter media? I bet flow is better in a ST filter (all other things being equal in this equation) than other filters with over 100 sq/in of media.

My contention is that 60 sq/in of media should do just fine filtering any oil in a gas engine for up to 7500 miles. These aren't extended use filters after all. Why pay more for those other filters if we're not going 10K-12K between changing filters? Seems like a waste of money.

These facts and specs are to help you base your own decision on what would be good for your application.

But if you want a suggestion for 7317s, based on what I've seen online with various filter comparisons and my own experience, I'd just go with OEM. They always seem to be quite robust and in my application, it's only $5 which is right around where all the other filters are of similar specs.

If OEM is too difficult to get or you are on a tight budget then, the Purolator Premium Plus is the way to go. Just wait for it to be on sale or when Pep Boys has a coupon available in the paper or in-store. I've seen the 7317 equivalent for as low as a little over $2.

Yes, I used a regular gear type can opener to open the ST and I used the sharper edge to cut the can while I had the gear on the base. It took only three leisurely turns to open it.

I haven't given up on ST. I have 4 Fram/ST size 3593As to open and according to another post on this board the ST is up there in that size. I plan to use that ST3593A on another one of my cars on it's next oil change.

Finally tore apart the Fram Tough Guard. I expected it to be toward the top, but wasn't expecting 132.5 square inches of filtering media! I even double and triple checked my measurements.

There was cardboard, but seemed to be double the thickness compared to the Fram made Nissan or Pennzoil filters I took apart. There is a screen over the plastic bypass which some say may be troublesome, but upon my inspection works just fine.

Looks like the best bargains are the Purolator Premium+ and Fram ToughGuard when available for $2-$3 or go OEM.

Updated table:

code:

Filter - Area sq. in. (Height x Width)

*Fram TG7317 132.5 (2.5 x 53)

Fram TG7317 120

Honda/Fram 115

*Purolator Premium+ 115 (2.25 x 51)

Bosch 3323 106

Fram EG7317 102

*Nissan/Fram? 102 (2 x 51)

Wix 51356 95

Mobil 1 M1-110 88

ST 7317 62

*ST 7317 62 (2 x 26)

I added a Nissan OEM 15208-9E000 straight from the Infiniti dealer to the mix. There are double sized cardboard endcaps similar to the Fram TG, but the bypass is similar to the Purolator. Cost $7. Am currently using a Purolator PureOne. Hope to see it cut up in 5 months.

Current recommendation remains. FRAM TG or Purolator Premium+ when on sale for $2-$4, otherwise OEM if you can find it cheap online.

*Nissan/Fram? (15208-9E000) 107 (2.4 x 44.5)

Fram EG7317 102

*Nissan/Fram? (15208 65F01) 102 (2 x 51)
