Certainly another option if you feel you can't get the plug out.

Yep. DIY is the way to go. I do it not so much to save money, but to save time. By the time I go to a mechanic and wait for it, its at least an hour and 1/2 of my life. I've got an oil change down to less tha 1/2 hour DIY. And you do it right and don't have morons goobering your car.

I always use a torque wrench on the plug. Its fairly light torque, 18 ft\lbs, but I have never had a leak, ever had the plug come loose and when I change it, all I need is a combination wrench to get it loose

That's one of the reasons I do the work myself. I recently had a shop do a wheel bearing for me because it was too cold and I had the flu. In hindsight I should have risked pneumonia and did it myself. The mechanic had to pull my 5 speed MT van into the shop to get it on a lift. The lift he was using had a ramp, once on the ramp the center part of it was a lift. Listening to him rev that engine and slip that clutch to get it on the ramp made me sick. I'm betting 50,000 miles of normal driving came off that clutch. I told his boss to start looking for help that could drive a stick! I was fuming mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you do not have a breaker bar, try as a last resort 2 large adjustable wrenches-make the 2 wrenches into 1 large wrench and use that leverage to try and break it loose. Other than that, again as a last resort, vise grips and a hammer, and don't tap it-hit it hard. Then go buy a new drain plug.

You uncle should be happy, if he took it in for another oil change to these guys, they would probably put on a new filter only and call it a day

.223 will just bounce off real metal. He better go with an AK47 or a M1 Garand.

My experience shooting steel plates show that velocity more than anything else will be the deciding factor on penetration. I have some hardened steel plates that I've shot with 5.56 (55gr, 3000fps) and M80 ball (147gr, 2800fps) in .308 that were barely dented. A 7.62x39 out of an AK will just go splat (123gr FMJ, 2400fps).

What tore the [censored] out of the steel plates was a 45gr 22-250 going about 3700fps.

FWIW - M855 out of an AR15 will out-penetrate a steel helmet at 600 yards over M80 out of a M14.

Go to any office supply store, ie. Staples, Office Depot, etc and get one of those air spray cannisters, the ones used to clean keyboards, etc. Then spray the drain plug. The air coming out of the can should be cool enough... Good luck..

Needless to say, I do oil changes for his vehicles now.

[censored], that is mess up. Wallmart doesn't pay its oil change guys very well so they are not likely to retain anyone decent. Indy shops, on the other hand, tend to let new guys do the oil changes so they can prove themselves. These guys would try their best to do good jobs so they can get extra training and become real mechanics. Unfortunately, this doesn't work at dealership.

No way!!!! The heavier .308 bullet will will produce many more foot pounds of energy than the 5.56 at all ranges and will retain more energy at 600 yards than the 5.56.

Out of all the tools out there... my old metal clothes hanger bar (cheater pipe) has been the one I've appreciated the most.
