Oil change turned into...

Yesterday as I pulled up to my house I was at 125,000 miles on the dot, time for an oil change. Finished up and when checking things out under the front, I saw pads were close to replacing. I already had a set of OE Volvo pads and rotors on hand, so I threw those on while the car was in the air. I don't believe in machining rotors, so I now have targets for when I go shooting next.

Also replaced the drivers mirror glass that randomly fell off on the drive home. Third time for the drivers time. I guess it is really common on the R cars because of the active suspension.

I don't buy the "suspension caused the mirror to fall off" idea. Plenty of cars with active/adjustable/ultra-stiff suspension that don't have that problem.

I suspect the design of the mounts is just bad.

I bought an R this past winter with 88,000 miles on it. They are a lot of fun. I looked for a long time before finding this one. It is an auto but like new inside and out and just to nice to pass up. Got any tips for a new R owner?

It is getting an Auto Rx cleaning cycle and then German Castrol at 5,000 mile intervals. The oil fill cap was spotless. The car was well cared for!

Hello, As a lowly V70 base owner I timidly suggest you do one transmission drain and fill AT THE VERY LEAST. This will give you the very best look at your trannie's juice. Your unit, as well as mine, requires a fluid which has a 3309 spec. Volvo fluid is quite expensive. Many buy Toyota Type IV fluid. I have used Toyota as well as Wolf's Head Universal Synthetic. The Wolf's Head is the best deal as Amalie (amaliestore.com) ships free. Kira

They use the same mirrors on teh standard and R models, but the falling off is a lot more common on the R models, especially ones like mine driven in Advanced mode a lot.

Gorgeous car.

A real sleeper. Handsome, low key, but a blast to drive and actually not too expensive to maintain or buy.

Always had a soft spot for Volvo and SAABs.

I change mine around every 5k miles, just so happened to hit 125K in front of my house yesterday.

Only use OE filters. Every fifth or so oil change do to the dealer and get a complete filter housing. Also get a new crush washer fro every oil change and a new o-ring under the oil fill cap. If you have a lot of oil consumption it is most likely the flame trap, replace that and every hose under the intake, it will suck, buy extra crush washers, there is a collection chilling on top of my gearbox.

No matter what tire you choose you will only get 20-25k miles out of them, even rotating often. Best tires currently for these cars are either the Michelin PS2 95Y or the Michelin Pilot Super Sport 95Y. I have had both and both are awesome, don't settle for anything less.

Aftermarket performance parts are sketchy at best. I have a whole collection of IPD parts collecting dust because they did not fit properly.

Changing the cabin filter makes a huge difference. Check which one you have before you get it from the dealer, there is a carbon version as well as a standard. No matter how you do it, you will get footprints on your headliner, when people ask make up a funny story.
