Oil change interval Mitsubshi Mirage 2024

The maintenence manual for this little car states the oil change interval for NON-stressed driving is SIX months or 7500 miles. I seems to me that this is excessive. I don't drive much, only 3500 miles a year and I've had to change the oil twice. Unfortunately, I'm an old beat-up guy, a disabled veteran, and I can't change the oil myself. Even my trustworth independent mechanic charges $90 (0-20 full synthetic but only 2 1/2 quarts) and the dealer is $200.

Opinions please

Others may disagree but I'd only change the oil once-a-year.
But Gee, the crank case only holds 2.5 quarts?
My GOOGLE search comes up with 3.2 quarts assuming the engine is a 1.2L 3cylinder engine.
But that's still not a lot of oil. I'd wish for at least 4 quarts.

It is assumed if you do low miles (not reach 7500) that you short trip the car, which is worse for water emulsions and fuel dilution. But if you don't, and you run the engine and drive at least 20 minutes each time you start it I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks for your service and once a year with any of the popular brands is going to be just fine. Since the sump is small I'd recommend frequent level checks if you can manage it, especially as the vehicle ages.

I do mine once a year. They aren't daily drivers and don't get a lot of miles accumulated in that time.

there are many good oils on the market, Pennzoil ultra platinum 0w-20 and a Fram ultra filter is a good way to go, as mentioned wall-mart can do the job, once a year at this milage will be fine. or take your oil and filter to your local mechanic place and see if they can do, is what I have done.

Your driving style definitely once a year, I have Mitsubishi Outlander and the manual States 3,500 Miles for severe and 7,500 for normal driving, I change my oil 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

The 6 month limit is there to account for the possibility of the car being short tripped daily, especially in cold weather, which is really hard on oil. If you're getting the engine up to temperature on a regular basis, a 1-year OCI will be just fine.

My only concern would be the possibility of Mitsubishi trying to deny a warranty claim if the oil is only changed annually. Though, it's not difficult to get a receipt for some oil and filters to keep in your records.

I look at it like this. At 3500 miles a year you will only have 35,000 miles in ten years time and 70,000 miles in twenty years. Are you likely to even keep it that long? I’m sure with once a year oil changes it will easily make it to 70,000 miles.

Are you suggesting that the OP falsify his records? I'm not judging, just want to be clear on what you mean.

Yes, I was suggesting keeping that option open. If they're going to deny a warranty claim in bad faith, some people (not me of course) might want to be prepared to stoop to their level. Though, it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Once a year is fine. Overkill even. How many years do you need the car to last? Times 3500 miles? It will take almost 30 years to hit 100k miles. Most of us will have hung up our keys by then and your car will probably be cruising right along just fine with annual changes.

Once a year should be good or get a MityVac and change the oil and filter once a year and vacuum out 3 quarts and change it without the filter for a few dollars in 6 months. Change the filter every year. If you do a lot of short trips and cold starts it takes a long time to hit 7,500 miles but the oil could be compromised in the wrong conditions. Where I live in the cold winters I wouldn't go that long if you do a lot of short trips.

I agree with the comments about short tripping needing more frequent changes.

I change at 7500 mile OCI's regardless of time. I go for 2-3 years or more on some vehicles and they still just keep on running. My trucks usually don't get much more than 1000 miles a year and the cars just a couple/few thousand. I consider it a waste of good M1 to change more frequently. Haven't had any motor problems yet.

Just bought a new 2024 Mirage in June. Fabulous car. A little over 1000 miles so far. Only 3 tanks of fuel through the car so far. One of those tanks gave me 48.5 mpg economy. First new car I ever bought with automatic transmission too.
