Just changed the oil and was doing a "Stevie Wonder" trying to install the new oil filter when all of a sudden it slipped out of my hand and fell into the pan of dirty oil.

had a little mess to clean up to. Is it time for bed yet?

it happens to the best of us. I usually drop the drain bolt or something into the pan of HOT used oil, not a brand new oil filter. You took the cake on this fail. Sorry bud.

I guess you can skip the good old; "Oil the gasket" part!...

I happent to the pit guy that changing oil, he just pick it up and reinstall it on customer car. I would get new oil filter, its just me.

Yes intentionally. I find I make less of a mess that way... trying to catch it. Then I break out the telescoping magnet pen to get it out of the pan.

My drain bolt falls in every time, I fish it out with my gloves. As for the whole filter, havent dropped it yet, im sure I will sometime in the future, probably many times!

Johnachak- Very clever and funny comment!

Not too bad really. Everytime I do an oil change I spill most of the oil between dropping the filter in the pan, splashing, and once the oil is changed, what's left in the pan gets spilled everywhere trying to dump it in to a jug. You're lucky.

Thats when you go to the kitchen and get that slotted spoon your wife uses. Just clean it good and don't tell her.

No, but I've dropped my coffee cup in the toilet, though.......

Years ago, I had a Ford 6.9l diesel pick-up. Normal oil change routine....dump old oil into pan...something like 12-15 quarts, change filter and discard....phone in house rings, go inside talk for a while, have a beer and snack...come out and dump 15 quarts of 15w40 Fleetguard oil from a 5 gallon pail into the engine. Wipe off hands and notice a Exxon Valdez-size slick of dirty oil running down my driveway... at least 10 quarts overflowing drain pan...you guessed it...never replaced the drain plug! Doh!(If you look just right...you can still see the faint stain in the concrete.)

I've dropped new oil filter few times into a drain pan, but didn't get much used oil on it. The oil is drained into the container very fast, very little oil is on the surface of the drain pan.

If a little oil on the gasket is good, then alot MUST be better :^P

A few oil change fails I`ve done:

One time I forgot to put the drain bolt back in and as I was pouring the brand new oil into the engine,I suddenly hear all this splashing, and I`m thinking,"Huh????????",and I suddenly realize all this new oil is pouring straight into the drain pan!

Another time,I didn`t pay attention when I`d removed the old oil filter (gasket came off and stayed on the oil filter tree). I started her up after re-filling the engine to back her off the ramps, and as soon as the engine started,I heard this shotgun sound, and the new oil filter had shot off like a bullet! I was like,"Woah!!!!!".

The last "oops!" I did......I`d finished the oil change, and decided to have a couple of coldies to relax a bit before backing my car down off the ramps, picking up my tools, etc. After my brews,I decided to go ahead and back my car down. I guess I was feeling REALLY mellow and had my head up someplace it shouldn`t have been and had forgotten I still had the oil drain pan under the car. Well,I back down off the ramps and ended up dragging my oil drain pan down the driveway, and it was stuck under the car, haha! I had to drive it back up the ramps to retrieve it!
