Oil Change Before Trip?

I'm surprised everyone responded without knowing what kind of miles the original 4,400 were. I mean, were they short-trip miles, highway miles, or something in between? Or do we trust Maintenance Minder that much?

The same thing applies to changing the oil every 3,000 (or 3 months). If you're a short-tripper, it only makes sense.

I don't agree the blanket statement, 3k/3months for severe service. Most owners manual severe service lowest is now 3750 miles or six months.

No need to ask what kind of miles the 4400 were. The MM is an algorithm that takes those factors into consideration when giving the dash board percent oil life left. I did ask 'how long' (no answer) to see if it was past or close to Honda's one year max no matter the miles.

Here, unless the OP was at or close to the 1 year max, at only 50% MM and 4400 miles he had plenty enough left in the oil for this 700 mile, mainly easy road miles, trip. Still plenty of leeway even if one doesn't completely trust the MM here.

Agree with the poster who said the OP was going to change the oil no matter, especially when getting to 5k OCI's is diffcult.

We all share these limited resources and if you are a flagrant waster, expect to get yelled at by somebody here. At least i guess most waste oil gets recycled or used for heating in heavy oil burners. Gotta change your wicked ways

I dumped my Ford FF at 1200 miles - I should get yelled at too

where i live most recycled oil goes to building roads.
on a different note i have about 40 gallons of 3k oil and i am really starting to think of ways to reuse it, as engine oil. keep an eye out for the thread. ill need some educated opinions

Not really... It's not a matter of trusting the MM "that much". It was at 50%! That tells you all you need to know about his driving habits during the interval.

Regarding electrolover's ? about the increased wear metals causing more wear, I'd simply suggest you go dig up some of the instances where multiple samples have been pulled from a single fill and been tested via used oil analysis. Universally they show PPM per mile decreases as the oil is in service (until of course, it doesn't, when the oil's past its service life--but at 50% on the MM, you're no where near that point). So, bottom line, you aren't doing your engine any favors by changing it earlier than necessary, unless you really need the added detergency of new oil.

...And yet when it suits the opinionated, MM and other OLMs are useless. Gotta love it. It's like living with my wife and also conversing with her on the forum.

Regarding UOA PPM, what about 5-25 micron contaminants? I don't think those do anything but go up and up as mileage accumulates. Most people don't have PC tests done with their used oil analysis.

Everybody is right in that the oil still has life left in it and you could easily wait until you came home to change it.

BUT - me personally, I would change it just because I like to go over my vehicles before a trip and be sure all is well. What better time to be looking at your car then when changing the oil? Plus - you feel better for doing it and that is good enough for me.

I've never heard anyone put forward a rational argument as to why OLM's are useless.

They go up in absolute, but not in PPM per mile. At least that's my experience having done multiple used oil analysis with particle counts on the same fill on my Volvo, and from the few used oil analysis I've seen here which meet that standard. Of course, this isn't surprising since the filter is increasing in efficiency, so there's that variable to factor in as well.

+1 and pretty much my point in my previous post. Even if one doesn't completely trust or follow the the MM, at 50% and 4400 miles little to be gained (engine protection wise) by changing the oil here.

And remember, now Honda/Acura have no owners manual severe/normal OCI listed, it's all MM read out. Before MM it was ~7500-10K OCI's.

ARCOgraphite Fresh oil = high detergency and reduced extreme wear protection compared to "used" oil. You guys still dont understand that the Ca sulphonate and resultant TBN are a necessary [I said:
EVIL[/I] not helping but hurting oil lubricity and EP protection? Back to the books!

Ok, how can I enjoy my vacation when you guys are putting me on this guilt trip?!!! lol

This quote is huge. Is this a well established point or is it controversial? If I understand, you are saying that oil lubricity and EP protection go through a maximum during the oil's life - low on new oil with a fresh detergent package and getting better as the oil ages. When does it start to decline? Does oil with 7k miles protect better than new oil?

PS The 4400k oil was only 4-5 months old.
