2012 C180 gasoline 1.6 litre turbo, 6 speed manual.
Headed to Nurburgring to do some laps. Driving there from Italy. Recommended oils are 5w-30 and 0w-40. Like the idea of the 5w part of the 5w-30 but appreciate the 40 of the 0w-40 for all the high speed driving that will be done but worried about the 0w part considering its summer.
Leaning towards the 0w-40, I believe I'm worried about nothing but had to ask

Your oil will never see the 5w or 0w cold weather spec while running at high speed in the summer. I'd opt for a Xw-40 weight oil. You pick, 0w-40 or 5w-40 or 10w-40.

Sound like a fun trip. Will you be posting pictures?

I used Castrol Euro 5-30 on Nürburgring with the Mustang GT. I imagine a 30 or a 40 will do you just fine.

It's summer so you could go up a notch. Enjoy the course!

The 0W part is not an issue. It basically represents what temperature the oil can still be pumpable at by it's grading. 0W grades can be pumpable at lower temps than 5W grades. It doesn't mean that it's "thinner".

That's my understanding from what I've learned here.

I'd use a 40 grade for racing. Many 30 grades are resource conserving so they're on the thinner side of 30 and probably not suited for racing/track environment.

I use Mobil 1 0w40 in my BMW X1 s28i and Mazda RX8 which is approx 12 Cst + vis.

There's all kinds of great UOA's here with it.

It's much more stout than Mobil 5w30 although the vis might be equal to Castrol 0w30.

That 0w throws everyone off, but think of it as the same weight of Mobil 1 10w30 at 0 deg C, and as it gets warmer the 0w30 gets thinner than the 0w40.

Or use Castrol Edge 0w40

SHU 5W40 is a full synthetic oil, GTL based that is rated API SN, ACEA A3/B4, BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, Porsche A40, etc

I hear it's easily avaliable in Europe, and it's one of the few Ferrari authorized oil, plus it's MB approved for your car.

But to be honest any oil that carries both MB229.5 and Porsche A40 would be fine to use. The M1 0W40 and Edge 0W40 come to mind.

How fresh is your brake fluid ?

Replacing pads, rotors, fluid at MB dealership before I set off. Thought about aftermarket but want to keep it simple and O.E. parts reasonably priced. If I upgrade it will be from MB. There is also the reality that the day I get there it could be filled with lots of tourists, so I'm trying to make it all work(track schedule vs my schedule) so I get at least two days.

I will probably go with a 5w-40, thanks for the research SR5. It's been awhile since my Playstation Gran Turismo days, but I'm practicing just to learn the course the best I can.

I would be more concerned about brake fluid ...

The ring isn't that hard on brakes unless you don't know what you're doing...

Keep an eye on oil temps if possible! Maybe through OBD? If you plan to do this again, it can help you with your oil choice. Most MB229.5 xw-40 oils are very close to the xw-30 viscosity limit, but not all!

The brakes have 19mm and 20mm remaining on the fronts. My journey will include a stay in Switzerland and obviously some high speed running on the autobahn. Rather do it now and not have to do it en route. It's a basic MB spec, only option is GPS.
Hopefully I can cut a lap in less than 8 minutes...haha kidding.
Thanks for your interest and advice.
