Odyssey Trouble & Warranty

I called HondaCare today and they said they will provide a rental for up to 6 days. They said the dealership has to arrange the rental and bill HondaCare for it. I'm going to swing by this afternoon after they determine the problem, so I'll let you guys know how the rental works out and what the dealership finds with the Ody.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah, my Toyota dealer is always "loaning" me the next nicer model...which is why I have a new Avalon.

They aren't stupid. I have purchased several cars from them. I actually have the Rav4 in for a recall repair today and my daughter is in town so she will use it. The service manager asked me if she wanted to try out a new 2014 Rav with the leather and nav package as they happened to "have one in the loaner fleet"

I said no way. I drove her to work instead.

My guess it is a faulty instrument cluster. I had one go bad on a Suburban that was about 6 months old. No big deal. They just pop in a new one...register the mileage and away you go. Just be sure to keep all receipts if it is a cluster to show a buyer in the future if there is a mileage concern.

If it is supposed to show mileage, why is there a character display? If the engineer went through the trouble of actually displaying "FAILED", then obviously the system knows why it wrote it there. One call to Honda corporate engineering and your dealer would be told the next step.

Those persons are insured for everything on the lot and can drive a used car from dealership's inventory. I worked at a VW dealership about 12 years ago. If you don't get excellent treatment, all you need to do is call the zone rep for Honda. The general rule is all warranty claim customers get first dibbs on a loaner car. Customers who drop their cars off for expensive "for pay" work only get loaners w/ approval of the service director of that dealership if a loaner is available. Warranty customers have priority.

NOT TRUE!
Some manufacturers will do this, and maybe this was VW's policy back when you worked at the VW dealer, but Honda is NOT going to give you a loaner. Neither will Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler, Hyundai/Kia, and MANY others. The dealer can do it if they want (most won't), but the manufacturer won't pay for it unless the customer has purchased an extended warranty that includes rental car reimbursement.

Hyundai does it for sure, so does Ford. Dealerships often have agreements with rentals anyway, so you should be able to get a loaner car without any hassle.

This is taken care of by either the roadside assistance warranty or powertrain warranty.

Honda Care is Honda's extended warranty. Rental car reimbursement is something that is a benefit included in the extended warranty policy that you purchased.

Negative!
Hyundai and Ford DO NOT provide (pay for) a free loaner or rental car for normal/routine warranty repairs unless you purchase an extended warranty from them.
Directly from a 2013 Hyundai warranty manual (P16)...
"Incidental or consequential damages, including without limitation, loss of time, inconvenience, LOSS OF USE OF THE VEHICLE, or commercial loss are not covered under this warranty."
If the dealer wants to pick up the tab for a rental or loaner, it is on THEM, not the manufacturer (with most manufacturers, under normal circumstances). If the dealer that you do business with does this, consider yourself lucky.
Many luxury brands DO provide loaners as part of their standard manufacturer's warranty coverage.
Also, most manufacturers will provide a loaner or rental car reimbursement under mitigating circumstances.

Good luck and relax, it is covered.

Typically you have to fight to get a loaner car with a lot of dealers or have the case escalated. Don't expect to walk in and drive away with a loaner car, in some cases it isn't that easy.

Well, picked up the rental tonight with HondaCare footing the bill. A 2014 VW Tiguan with 4k on it. I'm excited to drive it and give a full review.

The stealer was still diagnosing the Odyssey tonight. I'll update here when they find the problem.

There would probably so many extra lights for errors, that it would be impractical.

When I had my ION, the odometer would say "PWR STRG" when such an error happened. There were already enough lights taking up space.

I also wonder if it says error because a certain speed sensor isn't functioning properly.

Did this dealer stole or try to steal anything from you ? Did they try to recommend any unnecessary service such as fuel system cleaner at $99 ?

You didn't buy your van from this dealer and they still able to get you a loaner. So far I don't see any reason to call them "stealer".

Id say this is true, but given all the fancy stuff on cars, I see how it could be the case with any make.

All the fancy subsystems we think we deserve are just liabilities.

Bingo!

Simply put there are too many complexities on today's cars and you had to know that eventually reliability was going to start decreasing as things progress.

I will alway choose simplicity over the excess of electronic and accessory complexity if I have a choice. But the manufacturers are literally forcing the stuff on most consumers, because it is where they can make all manner of obscene profits for their greedy little fingers.

I think things will get interesting in the next decade because the blowback from over complexity and too many accessories (gadgets) is coming from consumers. I constantly hear friends, relative, and co-workers complaining that their vehicles have too many things in them that they pay dearly for and just about/ or never use.

Yup.
I think Honda's factory warranty requires a repair of 4.0 flat-rate hours or more before a rental is paid for.

Well, my friend, there is a reason I didn't buy the van through them. Their sales side was super sketchy and could never give me straight answers. I got the run around, I think mostly due to my age (32). So I took my business elsewhere.

I don't feel bad not buying the van from them and now using them for warranty. They get billable hours out of it, just from Honda and not me. I can also keep the service department on a short leash with just one word... "no".

When I first asked them about a rental they said that HondaCare wouldn't pay for it. After a phone call to HondaCare they changed their tune.

All that to say, I have my reasons for calling them a stealer.

A Honda dealer should know better than that!

That's the last message before it dies. It is like the word "tilt" on a pinball machine. My GM cluster read out a code. The mechanic said the code meant "FU I quit"

Stupid doesn't rhyme with "dealer".

If the car is under warranty, the dealer will provide you with a loaner. That has always been my experience. When you make the appointment you call and say you will need a loaner vehicle.

I've had loaners provided for free even out of warranty from the dealer, but your mileage may vary (GM and Enterprise service).
