OCI ???????? thanks in advance

Hypothetical question for dino oil........

Vintage older car well cared for but driven. Manufacturer calls for 3,000 mile OCI. The car is from the mid 80's before these extended drain period dino oils existed. Could you stretch the drain interval to say 4,000 miles if you use say Mobil 5,000 mile oil? Or would it be best to stay with the 3,000 OCI.

Well changing oil early is better than leaving it in for long periods of time. Not that 5K will hurt anything. If i were you i would flush out the oil system with auto rx then use moble one 5K and you should be good to go.

If it's frequently driven and stays at operating temp for sustained periods, go for it! I'd be a bit more leary in winter time though, but again, the key is sustained operating temps to burn off fuel and moisture. Plus, dino oils of yesteryear pale in comparison to todays product.

Fuel injection on engines was the dramatic turning point in terms of keeping the engines clean (ie: low to no fuel dilution). I would be reluctant to use long drains on cars that do not use fuel injection, but if you are running fuel injection, a longer OCI shouldn't be much of a problem.

Of course, UOA would give you more insight into your particular situation.

"Mobil One" use to be a trade name for Synthetic oil.
Is Mobil 5000 not a dino oil ?

Mobil 1 is Syn, Mobil 7500 is a blend, and Mobil 5000 is a dino (with some grp III???)

If its used at temp most of the time, Id pick a good 10w-30, or even 15w-40 oil, and run it to 5000 miles... I doubt itll be a big deal. Id suggest you run UOA a few times to be sure though.

Mobil clean 5000 or even 7500 10w-30 would be good choices.

Before i knew about this site i was doing 0ci every 1500 of mostly highway driving.I can't believe how much money and oil i wasted.Plus i did that for 250k miles on a 88 town car using dino

Now i do 5k oci using semi/syntheic on my 99 grand maquis in Miami Heat&nightmare traffic.Car seems happy going that route

One has to adjust one's OCI according to driving style, because city driving is murder on the drivetrain. For my 2003 Dodge Stratus, Daimler-Chrysler recommends 3K mi / 5K km for "severe" service and twice that for mostly highway driving, then notes that most cars fall in the severe category. Since oil changes are a breeze on this car, I am sticking with 3K-4K mi / 5K-6K km and Pennzoil 5W-30 dino.
