Just finished up a lot of work on the 968 I recently purchased and it's getting ready to go on the road.

In the past 10 years this car has gone less than 2000 miles. It has had at most 4 oil changes and the last one was in 2016 1k miles ago.

I did oil and filter (motul 5w40 and mahle) And now plan to drive the car often I was planing on ~5-7k oci's.
Just wondering if maybe I should shorten up the first 1 or 2 or am I GTG.

List of items just completed
Timing and balance belt and all associated rollers
water pump
thermostat
variocam pads
variocam chain
plugs
oil change
transaxle fluid change
brake fluid change
ps fluid change
new struts/shocks

So you can see I want to take care of this car

I think that a sort drain or two might be in order.
Probably lots of corrosion inside this engine from disuse.
I'd use cheap after MIR M1 0W-40 for these short runs.
Maybe a couple of 2-3K runs since you plan to use the car on a regular basis?

I highly doubt this.

Oil does not wear out over time. I would change the filter, which is more likely to break down from age, and run the quality Motul oil for a couple thousand miles if it were my vehicle.
Only real reason to do an oil change now would be due to the engine internals being opened up during the recent service, and potentially introducing dirt/dust.

Really? Maybe while it's still in the jug, unused from the blender, sure. But once it's in an engine and been run even once, the clock is ticking. Short trips, cold starts, and never getting the oil up to 212*+ will definitely age the oil, from fuel and water added to the mix as blowby and crankcase condensation. These are a couple of the only really useful items in a single, non-trended UOA: viscosity, TBN, flashpoint, and insolubles.

OP, if you just spent all that money doing all that work to a Porsche, is it really a big financial hit to spend another $45 on oil so it starts afresh? JMO...

Just to be clear, the motul that is in it now was changed yesterday. My basic question is should i run this full oci, or should i do a couple of early changes

Oil degradation is a chemical reaction-- if the air pump of an engine isn't bringing in new deleterious chemicals the oil will stay at 99%.

For example the sulfur that (used to) comes with gasoline is the source of sulfuric acid.

I'd start with fresh oil then give it one more early change to get rid of "whatever" concerns come with opening the engine up or perhaps suffering a poor tune before dialing it in, then rock on.

944 and a 968?

You like the VW

I do too though, this is a heavy chassis.

better than the 996

This is a wet sump?

I would have used a less expensive 10w30 HD - then run a couple hundred after the repair - then dumped it

Then go to full OCI.

You have too many cars, man

The only damage caused by a short OCI is to the wallet. I know a guy who only put 1500 miles on the oil in his weekend car. He saved it for top offs to his 560 K mile Long Gisland Expwy commuter car. Anybody you know drive beaters?

Porsch 968, manufactured from 1992 to 1995. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_968 My first thought: Anything that anyone says is speculation until/if/when an oil analysis is done.

Second and third thoughts...Nothing is stated regarding the condition/tests done on antifreeze or tires...

FWIW, I own and drive nothing except beaters. Worthless at the bank, but what do they know? They don't even ask the right Questions. My house is paid for, all my vehicles are paid for, and it's no ones business how much, what, or where I have set aside or if SHTF. Do what lets you sleep at night.

Peace friend.

Yeah I like these. I am a little to big ti fit in them but I have fun driving them. And yes I have way to many cars, I am starting to get rid of some, mostly by transferring ownership to my kids for the ones they drive.

Ihatetochangeoil
antifreeze was changed out with the water pump change
tires are getting done next week. I feel bad about this one, car has Conti extreme contacts on it now. They only have about 2000 miles on them BUT they have a 2209 date code on them

I think I'll go half oci on this oil and do an UOA at that point.

I tell you one thing, as much as a car can have feelings, this one is happy it is being driven. Every time I get in it it starts a little better, idles better, the hesitation on acceleration is gone, etc.
