Our basement recently became finished and cleaned to the point that we are finally going to use it as living space (yay!). One thing I haven't been able to sort out is the lighting for the basement stairs. The only switch for the lights over the stairs is at the top of the stairway, 90 degrees opposed to the travel of the stairs. Works great for when one wants to go down, but once there, the lights stay on the entire time until you come back up; it's wasteful, and I don't want to keep it that way. Unfortunately, the location of the current switch and layout of the home will make getting traveller wires to another location for a 3-way switch nearly impossible. So I installed an occupancy/motion switch that will take care of this for me, but it seems that the PIR beam the switch throws doesn't look down, meaning that when I come back upstairs, the lights don't turn on until I'm like 3 or 4 steps from the top. I understand why, and as far as I can tell, all of the occupancy sensors out there use a wide, flat beam to sense motion, but do not look downward at all. It's not the end of the world, since we have a nightlight on the stairs anyhow, but I'd rather have the lights turn on sooner when coming back up. Any ideas?
