Noticed new wording on M1 0W-40 label

I just picked up some M1 0W-40 at A/Z. Had an older bottle (new style container...curvy) from last purchase early summer of '06 so I compared the two.

Old bottle says pours at -65* while new bottle says pours at -49*. Is this an indication that the group/base has changed?

High temp protection is still claimed at 400* on both.

I also have an empty old style "square" bottle of M1 0W-40 with the phrase European Formula on it. It claims it pours at -65* on the label. I'm thinking that for sure the old square bottles had a group IV base as did the curvy style bottles for a time.

Looks like something changed here. I don't mean the writing but more like the formula inside the bottle.

Any thoughts on this?

Honestly.

Have you been watching the board for the last few months? or have you been away? it's totally cool if you have been away. There have a been a TON of threads questioning what Mobil 1 is REALLY made of. Some say Mobil replaced the group 4 and 5 oils with group 3, and they have been replaced for a WHILE.

I understand your meaning. I've seen most of the threads regarding M1 15W-50 as well as the 5-30's and 10-30's now being a group III. However it was the opinion of several postings that the 0W-40 M1 was probably still a PAO oil.

This was my first personal experience with a newly worded label on an M1 product.

Did not mean to come across as a dweeb.

yeah. i too have been confused about M1.

i posted a thread a while back, about changes in the labeling of M1, as to which blends are A1, A3, and A5 rated. The web site says one thing, and the label says another.

plus, i have NO idea which blends, ie 0w40, 0w-20, 5w30 etc etc, are now group 3. All of this is kinda frustrating to me, and naturally everyone else.

So, I think... until some one puts every different of M1 into a GC, we will have NO idea what is and is not group 4/5.

good luck with your choices. i have switched to german castrol 0w-30.

Exactly, the 0w40 has been opined to still be PAO. It doesn’t sound like it from the pour points though, now does it?
 
I'm guessing EOM uses various amounts of Group III depending on the grade. 0w40, 0w30, 0w20 probably have less, while the 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, 15w50 probably have more.
 
That would be a good guess. Wider spread formulae are a little more sensitive to base composition changes.
 
I noticed the web site for mobil 1 0-40 has the pour point in Cent. at -54. This converts to -65 Fahrenheit. I believe it say -65 Fahrenheit on the bottle but I will check tonight when I get home. Not sure where this -49 comes from. Is in Fahrenheit or centigrade?
 
Well I hope it's still a IV/V as this oil is specified for my new
Jeep SRT8. If a III I will for sure be looking at:
Amsoil European 5W-40
Red Line 5W-40
Or another excellent X-40
What other oils would fit in instead of the Mobil1 0W-40

It"s possible it's been reformulated as a recent Mercedes-Benz TSB to dealers instructs them to use Mobil 1 ESP 5w-40 in place of the 0w-40. Does the quart with the new wording still state it meets M/B 229.5?
 
Guess that means Delvac 1 aka M1 TDT 5W-40 is the last known GIV/V M1.

I suspect that the reformulated 0W-40 still meets MB 229.5 but only the new M1 "M" 5W-40 meets DC 229.51.

The change in oils was done to keep the emissions controls in better shape, not anything else. But I do expect the new oil (5W-40 ESP) to be better..it's just not what drove the change by MB. Yes, current M1 0W-40 still meets MB 229.5.
 
Thought I chime in here again. I went out for a long drive and ened up in a small town in Indiana. Stopped in at the A/Z for the heck of it.

They had some pretty old stock of M1 0W-40 on the shelf. They still had the square bottles that said "European Formula" on them. That's from what...2003 or so?

Pretty amusing.

I did not buy any. But the more I think about it I'm going back to buy some of it. Like you I think it was the best formulation of M1 0W-40.

Anyone else care to add anything about the old square bottle "European Formula" M1 0W-40.
