If my kid going to college can not be trusted to do a simple thing like get the oil changed on their car, then they prob should not be going to college.

My kids (both WELL under 18) know how, why and would get the oil changed since they would respect their vehicles and know how important maintenance is.

Again, if the "millions" of people can not change their oil at the recommended OCI, why do you automatically think they now are going to remember some new number?

Does running Mobil 1 give them brain cells?

Must have missed that commercial....

If they are not responsible enough to check their oil (my 9 year old can and has) then they should not be driving (and owning) a vehicle.

That's ok, I'm sure there will be a bail-out for that soon....

While I agree with you, I'm not sure we should say anything about college kids, when many "grown ups" do not check their oil, much less get it changed.
For the record I did the same thing with my girls. If you are driving a car you should know how and actually check under the hood and check your tires on a regular basis.

I have three siblings that were school teachers. For many years I used to change their oil for them. I would hand them a report card when I got done with their vehicle! :) They got a grade on air pressure in tires, coolant level and levels of various other fluids under the hood.

All they are doing is a compare/contrast to show you it's possible to extend drain intervals when using a synthetic. I also don't like to change my oil, so having to going once year on a synthetic often pays for itself.

Bill you're right if a kid doesn't know how to check oil they shouldn't drive. Funny thing is most of the kids I know, know 2 things about a car. 1. It needs gas. 2. How to ask Mom and Pop for gas money. Glad my son doesn't fit into that category!

I think I fit the category of the younger generation here since I'm only 25. I think you would all be surprised at how many college kids don't understand all that stuff about taking care of a car. If they remember 3 months or 3,000 miles that is considered a win.

To put this in perspective for you, in my four years in college only one of my friends was on top of taking care of his car.

The young generation--whatever they choose to call us--has no idea on how to take care of stuff because so few of their parents ever showed them or explained the importance. Their parents just took care of all that stuff.

Just watched the "test" again...
33.gif

"testing Mobil 1 against leading competitors"

They did not test it using Syn power. Or PP. Or Syntec? They used a conventional oil.

116k engine torn apart for the Mobil 1 engine. (Loved that the cam"does not have bearings and sits on the block"... Problem is that the cam sits on the head.. Look down Mr. "Tech")

At what miles did they tear part the conventional motor? (since we know that taking a motor apart is the TRUE way to test how a motor oil is doing)

121k they took the cam cover off. Did not show a conventional motor taken apart. Did not show the bearings and all the wear. What about the cam chain?

Oh sorry. No show (since it would have prob looked like the Mobil 1 motor)

The owner or rep of the Taxi cab company said going to Mobil 1 has cut their "waste" in half. So that means their OCI IS 7,500 miles on conventional oil.

NOT 15k like the unbiased Mobil 1 test.
crackmeup2.gif

How about they take one of their (I'm sure they have at least one) 7,500 mile OCI cam covers off and show us that?

Or how about they take one of those 7,5k OCI on conventional motors apart around 120k (since Mobil 1 loves that mileage) and lets see how that motor is doing.

Sorry no can do... (I forgot that this test is unbiased and honest)

Hey if you want to save labor fine.

But not every vehicle IMO can or should go into a 15k OCI blindly. And that is what Mobil is telling people to do. (And Castrol with their idiot dipstick Edge (which WILL be gone quicker than "Startup oil")

Their "test" is not one. It is a marketing piece that does not even show facts.

Bill

NYquist I know exactly where you're coming from. I always took care of my son's car. Many times I offered to show him how to do things, he didn't have the time, nor the desire to learn. Fast forward 3 + years, he lives on the other side of the country and is in the Navy. He'll be deploying shortly and will want a refresher on how to store the car for 9-12 months.

He currently owns a 2000 BWM and now calls me asking how to fix things. He'll say; "Pop I wish I would have taken more of an interest, when you offered to teach me." "Paying someone to fix this BMW ain't cheap." I laugh and offer what ever assistance I can from 3000 miles away. I will say this though he stays on top of things.

As far as the generation thing goes, I'm from the enabler generation. My generation did everything for their kids. I'm self taught for the most part, because I hate spending money on jobs I can figure out myself, and in most cases do better than someone I pay.

Both Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Castrol Edge are guaranteed to go 15,000 mile OCI.

You seem to be saying they will not. Prove it.

True. Bill, Mobil and Amsoil guarantee their products. Both companies have been doing this for over 30 years. If it didn't work, they wouldn't be around. So why don't you chill out and produce some of your own facts instead of going on your usual anti Mobil tirade. At least they are promoting "conservation" something you love to talk about.

You weren't there to see the tear down. You also didn't mention the 3rd party that tore down the engine and said it could go another 100k miles. But continue to use the lowest price oils you can find, and spend more time changing your oil. You must love to get under your car a lot.

Bill is correct. Neither oil will miraculously support an engine that has a problem of some sort over a 15K mile OCI. A leaking injector, coolant leak, or something along those lines can throw a wrench into those 15k mile OCIs in a hurry. Going into those extended used oil analysis blindly (without used oil analysis) is probably not the best idea, especially with an older engine.

Been here as long as you Buster.

I've proved what I say for years.

So no comment about the test Buster? You have no comments on what I brought up?

My anti-Mobil tirade is only on Mobil 1. I've recommended Mobil 5000 many times. Why, because Mobil has not done the usual [censored] marketing with 5000 that they have with Mobil 1.

I call them as I see them man. If Mobil did their "taxi test" like I typed above, I'd keep quiet.

Since someone brought it up, seems that no one else will call them out.

Oh, I forgot. We should just watch the programming and repeat.

Sorry. Not going to happen with me.

Take care, Bill

Why don't they just have a single Mobil 1 product now and since their warranty is so good and guarantee it in ANY car for 25k?

Engines are FI and unleaded now... Should be so easy....

"Guaranteed performance and protection for up to 15,000m." Thats a quote from Mobils web. Notice the 2 little words "up to". In other words, what they are saying is in the right circumstances you could run it 15k, however, I do not think they are saying you can go 15k in every situation. Again, up to tells you this is best case scenerio. Just like the dept store ad in the window says "up to 80% off." That does not mean everything in the store is 80%.

Because the OEM's dictate drain intervals. I'm not advocating everyone run blind 25k mile drain intervals. I also don't know of anyone that has lost an engine doing 25k mile drains either.

What you do is fine, but you can't discredit extended drain intervals when it's prove to work.

(since you added this to your post after I replied.)

I was not there. Did not see that he was a 3rd party. Sounded like he was the mech for the Taxi company. Since the video is so poor and you can not enlarge it I don't know.

Again, Where is the tear down for the 15k conventional oil motor? I want to see all the sludge in the pan!

Even more important is where is the valve cover shot for the 7.5k conventional OCI motors? And the tear down please?

How about all of them after a REAL high mileage number of let's say 250k? (because face it Buster, if 116k is a high miles motor, you and I are both screwed with our 2005s
LOL.gif
)

I buy vehicles that are easy to change oil and maintain. If I can not take 30 minutes out here and there to change oil, I prob should not be driving the car.

Also, since I do drive more than the average person, I do drive a fuel efficient vehicle. Is there something wrong with that?

Take care, Bill

When I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my Fords I still change it out at 10,000 miles even though the one UOA I did on EP was great at that mileage. Could have gone much futher. No doubt the EP line is a great oil. I've used it in my high mileage Mercury for several years.
