Update, the noise is only getting louder and making me mad. As of now, I have about 1200 miles on the oil. This is really aggrivating the **** out of me and I've had enough, it's time to do something. How will the Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment affect LC or vice-versa?? Thanks again everyone,,,,AR

================================================

Are you sure about the location of that engine noise?

Last week, my daughter's engine sounded terrible. It turned out to be a bad serpentine belt tensioner.

Similar thing three years ago.... that time it was blown bearings in the water pump.

Coming from a long time Isuzu owner, the 4-cylinder engines were Chevy/GM, and they were also put in earlier Troopers/Rodeo's and no, they were not the greatest.

However, Chevy's 3.1L V6 was put into the 91-92 Rodeo's and that was a good engine. From 93-on, all V6's were/are Isuzu, and all 4-cylinders from late 80's on in the S10/Sonoma, Troopers, and then Rodeo's were GM built.

If you have ruled out any serious mechanical issues I would definately try the Synpower oil treatment (I get it at Autozone) with the existing oil if you don't want to change right away. It will increase viscosity and add some extra FM's.

If your willing to change I agree with TS, go for the M1 5/40

I was looking at the VOA of the Synpower Oil treatment. TallPaul figured it wuold bump the viscosity by 2cst @100*C So if M1 10w30 is 10.5cst @100*C + your bottle of Synpower, then that's 12.5cst @100*C According to BITOG's viscosity chart, that will take me well into the 30wt range, maybe 40wt?? Which is about what I'm looking for.

Now my decision thus far is to use a quart of 5w40 or Synpower Oil Treatment. Thanks,,,,,AR

Guess I don't understand here. If your so unhappy with this oil and its driving you crazy every time you drive why not drain it?

I just returned from Autozone and they didn't have neither the Synpower Oil Treatment nor the T&SUV. They didn't even have any 5w40 viscosity oils for that matter. I was disappointed so I just ended up going with 1qt of 15w50. I'll do that and report back. Thanks,,,,AR

As mentioned before, I only have 1200 miles on the oil and I feel that dumping it now would just be a waste of money and perfectly good M1,,,,AR

Dumping it is the safest bet! You may have some very rare defective oil in there.

Hard to believe AutoZone didn't have any 5W-40 Delvac-1.... a sister to the 5W-40 T & SUV.

On 2nd thought.... Auto Zone not having some oils doesn't surprise me. The one by me does not stock any 15W-40s -- absolutely none!

Amazing....

Yep, I was never impressed with AZ by any means either. What gets me is they stock Lucas products but they don't have Synpower Oil Treatment!? My AZ does have a few 15w40's such as Coastal 15w40 in 5gallon buckets, Delo 15w40 and SAE30, Delvac 1300 15w40 and Rotella 15w40.

I'm waiting for the truck cool off alittle bit so the oil is warm and I don't burn myself nor make an unecessary mess. I'll keep everyone posted of what's going on and how the truck reacts to it,,,,AR

I know you are certain about the location but I can't help but tell you I had a similar experience and it ended up being the heat shield on the cat converter. It would only rattle on decceleration and after the car warmed up it would go away. sorry if that sounds stupid but just wanted to cover all posabilities.

My '91 Chevy C2500 had a 350 in it. At about 190,000 miles it started to rattle on deceleration (warm or cold). The motor slowly began to lose power and I took it out and had it rebuilt at 235,000 miles. The noise was a broken wrist pin. It was wedged in enough that it held under no pressure or positive pressure, but under the negative pressure of idling while the engine naturally slows the truck it rattled. The engine shop owner was amazed at two things with the motor. First, it was EXTREMELY clean inside. The cylinders looked nearly new as did most everything else. Secondly, he couldn't believe that that wrist pin didn't blow a couple inch hole through the side of the block. It was worn to the point of being rounded quite well on the areas that constantly rubbed together.

Update: The 15w50 seemed to really help it out. It has quieted down and it gave the oil a very nice rich brown color which makes it alot easier for me now to read the dipstick.

Willscary, those 350 motors will run a long time and nice thing too is you can get parts for them at just about any auto parts store, salvage yard and what not... Thanks everyone for there help,,,,,AR

Yea that's a 'firm where the noise is coming from which is right near the valve cover. My last OCI was with GC+LC and a MC filter for 8000 miles. My truck would still make that noise upon decel, but as mentioned before, it wasn't near as noisy with that combo.

If I had something to record the sound with, I would do so, but I don't,,,,,AR

I'm wondering if the 1500mi you had on the 10w30 EP cleaned stuff off the valvetrain and therefore exasberated the noise you hear, EP does after all contain more additives than regular Mobil 1.

Seems to me that if the noise only lessened with the 15w50 added, that soemthing mechanical is causing the noise, and the oil is either masking it or not. A UOA, even with 1500mi on the interval, would have helped us determine it wasn't the oil, which is what I think its not.

Triple Se7en, yes I drained out a quart of 10w30 and replaced with 15w50, seems to have smoothed out nicely.

ChrisW, it's possibility. Last year when I ran 5w30SS, my engine made the same exact noise in the same situation All I can do though is quiet it down and be happy,,,AR
