Yes 6 full quarts of that oil, I've never done a UOA but I might look into it this time around.

The only thing that I can figure is that it occurs during both and cannot be heard during accelleration. That still leaves steady state instances unexplained.

My Z28 rattles very audibly on decel, especially when cold and at low RPMs. UOAs have come back showing very good wear numbers, so I don't lose a yawn over it.

My Ford 460 V8 motorhome has a weird rattle under light throttle where it is right between load and decell, and only on the highway.

Sounds like the "marbling" sound that some Ford engines make, especially the 4.0. I've even heard my 3.0L make that sound occassionally, but you have to be underneath the truck to hear it.

Hmmm, the Aerostar 3.0 was making a noise, not really a rattle, but a dull low repeating tone under acceleration in the lower RPM range. Haven't noticed it lately, maybe about since I upped the viscosity from typical 10w30 10.5 cSt to 11.5 cSt with a little 15w50 in the mix.

My engine sounded like a diesel with the dealer oil in there 5.6l lots of injector noise. I put the M1ep 5w30 in its really quiet now I can't even hear the injectors anymore. Hasnt used one drop of oil yet 1500mi and still very clean looking i'm happy so far. I still have to do a uoa to confirm but its weird how some report more noise with the ep using the same weight as the prev. brand and all my noise went away. Any ideas?

Mobil 1 EP 10w-30 runs extremly smooth in the Honda. Quieter and smoother then the 5w-20.

Actually the late 90's 4 cylinder Rangers are some of the most reliable small trucks on the road, don't even get me started on S10's.

Chevy makes a great V6. The ones in the s10's were super reliable, and very powerful. I agree that the 4 in the s10 was not so hot, but it wasnt built by GM was it? I thought Isuzu built there 4 for the s10/sonoma.

In the 4.0 sohc Ford engine that "marbling" sound you hear when the engine is not totally warmed up is the defective timing chain tensioner. They have been defective since the engine was introduced but Ford still won't "fix" the problem. It occurs when the engine itself is not totally warmed up, usually between 2200 rpm and 3000 rpm. Especially if the engine is under load such as going up a slight incline. When the engine is totally warmed up you don't hear it. It almost sounds like a spark knock but more mechanical sounding. There are 2 tensioners, one in the front of the engine and one in the rear. The front one costs around $300-$500 to replace. The rear one costs around $2,000 to replace, they usually remove the engine to get at it

! This condition usually appears at around ~40,000 miles. Conveniently after the warranty has expired

Aside from running no oil at all, the Ford 2.3/2.5 4cyl OHC motors are totaly bulletproof. I would put money on them being as good as anything from Toyota, Honda, etc. I am familiar with the rattle noise that you are speaking of. It happens when the RPM's are coming down with no load on the motor (It is valvetrain noise and is nothing to worry about). I have had a couple 4 banger Rangers, they both ran excellent, and were whisper quiet on 5w30 or 10w30 Havoline Dino. I did run Amsoil 5w30 in my 98 2.5 for a while with great results, The Mobil 1 was noisy. I would suggest trying a quality dino and see if it is quieter. I am not putting down synthetics, but my experience with these motors is that they like conventional oil, they also are very easy on oil with no sludge issues.

I think it is strange as well, my gm v6 3.4L does this and I have always assumed it to be piston slap but it's a clattery sounding noise. I don't know what it is, could be the valves, lifters. It got worse with M1 5w-30, the UOA was bad too, I'm going to see how things fare with Rotella 15w-40.

Although not a Ford, I checked the PCV valve, not from there on mine. My engine does it almost inaudibly at under 1000, it stops over 1400rpm and it the worst on decel from 1400rpm going down to 1000rpm.

a couple of guys tried using mobil 1 ep 10w30 and their oil pressures dropped to 20 psi..they one changed to synergyn 5w 30 qne the other went to redline 10w30 and their oil pressure way back up

Update, the noise is only getting louder and making me mad. As of now, I have about 1200 miles on the oil. This is really aggrivating the **** out of me and I've had enough, it's time to do something. How will the Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment affect LC or vice-versa?? Thanks again everyone,,,,AR
