Not familiar with car sales tactics from this era, enlighten me please.

Is a 6 year old Malibu much more than $10k?

Do you have a terrible claims history or terrible credit? $257 is really high for a pretty cheap car with low limits.
No my claims history is minimal, and my credit is considered prime
Why not just bump those deductibles up and just set aside a rainy day savings to cover the deductibles if needed?

I am not intimate to your finances but you seems to allude on one hand you can afford things and then on the other just do not want to pay it but then state you do not want to be short of money like your mother?

You remind me of a co-worker that is flush with money but it takes a crow bar to open that wallet up to even buy a soda.
Hey, I learned from my grandfather

And I'm not too thrilled that I would be paying more per year for the insurance then the car.

Insurance seems high to me--my 3 year old Corolla is like that, but I have two teenagers and full collision. [It's a rip-off, they're on our same age Camry--and it costs less.] But good on you for looking first! car ownership is more than just one line item for cost.

I hate car shopping. Wife wants me to find something soon, but I don't want to spend the money. I know if I spend too little, I won't get what I want (reliability, low TCO) but I sure don't want to tote a note at this time.

OP where are you located? With your profile incomplete it's impossible to know if that insane insurance in a sensible part of the country or normal insurance in an insane part of the country. And as mentioned, those deductibles push premiums up a lot. Run another comparison with $1k deductible on both and see what you get.

I'm located in Hampton Roads Va.

Time to shop around then. I pay just a bit more than that for a 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance AND a 2024 Yukon XL with $500k in bodily injury, $500k in property damage and $500k uninsured motorists. Teslas aren’t known for being cheap to insure either.

So on Saturday I went and looked at a 2018 Malibu LT. Sales guy seemed nice, told him I needed to sell my car first before I could commit to anything but I was interested. After the test drive they hit me hard with a few sales tactics. They hit me with the double team, and the sales manager would come over and play bad cop, while the sales associate I dealt with was the good cop.

I will admit I'm mentally ill and they were so aggressive I had a flare up of my disorder.

What happened to the sales tactics from when I bought my Buick 12 years ago. they were very polite, answered all my questions and got me a great deal on the car I wanted. Now it's buy, buy, buy or else. I was left with my head spinning like son of gun but I didn't crack and buy anything.

How do I withstand this constant barrage of BS? I felt like I was being interrogated by the feds.
Get up and walk out, it works every time! If they don't chase you on your way out odds are the price isn't going any lower. I've been chased after a few times, at that point I'm done playing with them, they pissed me off and I have been known to tell them to shove it. My wife hates when I do that. ;) There are a lot of tricks to get the best price, an educated consumer willing to leave if they don't get the deal they want is their worst customer. If you're financing know your credit score and get rates from banks and credit unions. Watch out for them packing deals when financing.

Then that APR is really high.
9.49 according to carmax. I was talking about the insurance premium being really high. I am with Allstate if that matters. 257 monthy or a bit over 1500 every six months.

I don't know how VA compares but here in Houston(ish) we pay about $1500 for 6 months for 2 cars full coverage with $500 deductibles and 100/300 liabilities.

I'm pretty sure State Farm just lost a customer. Progressive only wants $121 for full coverage.
Here is the rub. Insurance companies have a special rate table for new customers. Then after that the rate goes up. The work- around USED TO BE just to switch companies- but when you do that now it is held against you. They can see everything through Lexus/ Nexus reporting. Enjoy the newer rates as long as it lasts.

Looking at the paperwork she provided for the quote - $0 deductible for comprehensive, $250 for collision and they added towing and rental car coverage. Didn't explain anything to me. When I called back up see if there was some mistake she got nervous, choked up and also clearing her throat a lot. I feel bad for get but she got to be more transparent.

$230 with state farm vs $136 with Progressive. Talked to my buddy who's had them since 2020 and even thought he has a salvage title his rates haven't gone up much.

When I get better and am ready to purchase I will switch to Progressive.

For a commodity like auto insurance, there can be a huge difference in premiums between companies.
