Not another Valvoline R&P thread

I’ve had the 2007 Kia 3.8L MPI engine which was bullet proof and still didn’t burn a drop of oil at 270K miles of hard mixed driving . A family members 2017 Kia 3.3L DI engine is doing good to date at 70K miles .

We’ve had a 12 Sedona with the 3.5 in the family for 13 years and it’s been absolutely fantastic. About 151k now and plan is to run it to 200k before retiring.

I'd check out the filters subforum. Many have already plowed the path you're on. Premium Guard (e.g. Carquest Premium) filters are thought now to be the best. And we would by all means appreciate whatever you have to contribute as well. Cut filter photos are always appreciated.

At your suggestion I checked out Premium Guard Extended Life. The one thing holding me back was the bad efficiency specs posted on their web site. So I started looking at MicroGuard Select Extended Life, also made by PG, and cut apart samples of the PG4476EX and the MSL10322. They are both very nice and almost identical, but I noticed some subtle differences. One is place of origin: the PG was made in China, the MG in Vietnam.

Another difference is the filter media. The PG media seems to have a finer "grain", it's "smoother". The can is also a bit taller than the MG, so a bit more filtering surface area. The media thickness for PG .0360", for the MG it's .0363. This is measuring ten plies then dividing by ten

The gasket is also different, the MG has a rounded top, almost like an "O" ring. The PG is flat, both are red in color.

But then I saw your post about the web site being wrong after you contacted the company! I'll repeat your info here:

After calling PG tech support I finally got an answer!!

The micron rating range of the PG XL is 15-25. Meaning 98.7%@15 and 99.9%@25. The micron rating range of the regular PG is 42-60 98.7%@42 and 99.9%@60. The significance of 98.7% is an absolute micron rating for automotive oil filters.

These ranges are under the wrong filters on the website in error. I figured this out after the fact by looking up a regular PG and PG XL for one of my cars. At some point I will need to call back tech support to let them know.

It makes intuitive sense that the finer-looking filter media would filter smaller particles, so that in conjunction with your efficiency report now has me on the PG side of the fence. They are both very clean, without any spattered glue like the Puro One, the pleats were straight, the ends crimped with a metal clamp, and the bypass valve was coil-spring backed and built into the bottom of the filter element, so no permanent bypass leaks! Both brands also came with a cellophane seal on the can, which suggests quality and an attention to detail not seen in many other brands, at least in my mind.

Bottom line: I'm going with the Premium Guard Extended Life.

I'll attach some photos showing the filtering media. The first shows the texture difference, PG on the right. The second shows how they look with a light behind, PG on the right. The third photo shows the gasket difference, this time PG is on the left.

Sorry, wrong attribution to the person calling PG. That was Glenda W. I'm new to this forum business.

Thank you for cutting and sharing!

Love talking filters!

Yes, I’ve called PG several times now and the official PG EX(Extended Life) efficiency range is as follows. This also applies to the 10k filters made by PG for others.(Carquest Premium, Microgard Select etc.)

98.7%@15 microns(absolute)
99.5%@20 microns
99.9%@25 microns

The website has finally been updated for the EX showing 25 as the micron rating. The regular 5k filters are still incorrect and show the EX range like above(15-25).

PG has factories in Vietnam, China, and S. Korea. You will see some slight differences between factories but QC remains fantastic. Headquarters are in Memphis, TN, R&D and engineers are located in Bridgewater, MA.

This new PG filter just dropped late last week!! I’ll be making some calls today.
