Not a Dirty Job, but a High Powered Job

I can't even imagine how you get someone to train for that sorta job.

That guy is wasting his time doing that. He should be doing voice overs for commercials for Murphy's Oil Soap or MMO or something. Way too much calm "wisdom and poetry" in the voice.

They've authorised "live line" work in Australia for about 10 years or so.

Seeing the arcs pulled in a switchyard on a foggy morning on a de-energised line, there's no way you'd get me within the "safe working distance" of anything over 500 volts.

As to jobs,I was supervising a steeplejack who was inspecting one of the chimneys at work (180m high - 590 feet).

This guy was fit - extremely fit.

He'd strap the 6' ladders over his shoulder, and climb up to the socket for his next installation. Place one of the ladders in it's sockets, then bolt it to the chimney.

Climb up that ladder and repeat. repeat once more.

Climb back down and get another three ladders. Climb back up etc.

At the half way mark, he assembled a platform around the chimney with a winch, so he only had to climb loaded half the way.

When it the top, the chimney sways around 8" in a mild breeze. I've climbed a 250m chimney, and the feeling of it swaying while you look down almost induces you to fall off.

Anyway, I told this guy that they couldn't pay me enough to do his job.

His reply was that the pay is "awesome" "They pay me $25/hour to do this you know ?"

Who says you can't find good help? (pssst-everyone that I've ever heard say that really meant "You can't find good help CHEAP")

That was very interesting!

Not surprising that it's an IMAX film; it has that "feel" to it.

Watched similar a few years ago on transmission line behind my house. Kept hearing chopper and rode 4 wheeler to see. Guy did all work from platform on bird though, no climbing out on wires.

That type of energized work was pioneered in China. Even still photos of the process send chills down the spine of those of us who have seen what power there is in those lines.
