Article discusses the Industry trend of multiple synthetic lines within a brand.

For Mobil 1 fans, AFE 0w20/30 are on the same performance level as EP. (Tbn is probably higher with EP)

So you have:

1. Mobil Super Syn
2. Mobil 1
3. AFE & EP

Very interesting...But Mobil 1's website does not reflect the statement that Mobil 1 AFE and EP are on the same tier.

For example, if I go to the Mobil 1 website and use the "what's the right oil for my car" feature, and tell it to "Help me decide" - if I pick "Ultimate protection" it states it does not have a product in the ultimate tier to recommend...For my 2011 Tundra, 0W-20 is preferred - so if AFE was considered their top tier, I would think it would position that as their "Ultimate protection" recommendation - instead it recommends it for their "Superior Protection" tier.

I find this contradiction amusing; an illustration of marketing speak:
"The synthetic-blend category has been evolving, and we believe it's the right time for a multi-tiered synthetic motor oil strategy," Shearer said. "Most consumers today want either a conventional motor oil or a full synthetic."

If you look at the product comparison charts they are using on the backs of the bottles and Mobil website, you'll see the AFE match identical to EP. Slightly better oil.

I thought that AFE is just a regular M1 with a different name invented by marketing people. It's not on the same performance level as EP which is claimed to perform up to 15k miles. But if I'm buying M1 xW20/xW30 I would choose 0W20/0W30 without questions.

HTSS_TR -

That is/was my impression as well - that AFE is regular Mobil 1 but with a marketing "spin" to highlight the fuel economy advantages.

so it launched a Mobil Super Synthetic as part of its introduction of the Mobil Super line of motor oils (which include conventional, high-mileage and "base" synthetic motor oil; note there is no synthetic-blend product in the lineup).

Mobil Super High Mileage is a blend, isn't it?

I believe so.

Yup. I forgot to include a link to its PDS:

"Mobil Super High Mileage uses a combination of synthetic and conventional high quality base oils..."

Kind of blows the author's entire premise of manufacturers moving away from synthetic blends out of the water.

I understand the syn concept-but that has to be one of the most poorly written articles I have read in years.
He starts off with saying Mobil introduced the first syns-I thought Amsoil did??

Yeah it wasn't that good of an article. The only thing I found interesting was that AFE is on par with EP. Weird.

Yes it is. I just bought this for my grandsons 94 Dodge Ram 1500.

Both oils are outstanding as I have used both in my Duratechs. I just changed the Focus over today to 0-20 and noticed the 10K 5-20EP still looked and performed like several Ks were left in the oil.

Depends how you look at it. Mobil had synthetics many years before Amsoil, but in the aviation industry and for heavy equiptment for Artic use. Mobil was the first major company to produce synthetic oil for the general public in 1974, a little after Amsoil. I started using M1 5-20 in 1978 when I lived in Maine for the cold temp. benifit.

I believe the major differance between 0-20 and 0-30 compared to the EP oils is the TBN is a little lower.(still good for 10-12K OCIs though) The base stock and other additives is probably simular.

That's what I'm thinking.

Eh...I'd have to disagree. XL is 100% group 3, which is more like Mobil Super Synthetic. Mobil 1, is most likely a combination of base oils...not just group 3 (though I'm sure it does contain a large quantity of group 3...depending on viscosity). Mobil 1 5w-30, 0w-20, 0w-40, 5w-40 (TDT), and 5w-50 are probably the best M1 grades based on high quality (group 4/5) oil content. The Mobil 1 HM oils are also very good in this regard...probably.
But in reality, nobody really knows the full base oil breakdown of M1. Its probably changing on a regular basis too.

Why does everything oil related have to be so complex? Lots of opinions here, and guessing about a product line, even reading the on the M1 site leaves me guessing.
