Right around summertime I noticed that there was noise coming from the engine area on my 95 Galant (2.4L, 144,000 miles). Sounded like rapid grinding noise. Stethoscope inspection narrowed it down to the water pump. I think the reason for the noise was a power steering belt that was on a bit too tight. I figured some kind of damage was being done to the water pump bearings. I loosened up the belt a bit back then. Now the same noise from the water pump is getting louder. Is there anything I can do, short of replacing the water pump?

sounds like it's new water pump time to me.

Some pumps have a small hole to drop oil/grease into the bearings.

once you replace the pump use a good anti freeze lube additive, I use these additives in everything I own, Bars Leak, Gunk, Motormaster, what ever is handy, I find these lubes greatly extend life of water pumps, when I buy a second hand vehicle I get this stuff in the rad immediately. In 25 years of long K driving on vehicles I have replaced one water pump, works for me.
