no GC at autozone...

I spotted one of the guys from my local autozone in New Braunfels, Texas out and about the other day. He told me not to worry as they were simply trying to sell all of the current stock in preparation for a new bottle design coming out soon...

LOL hopefully that's true. At least we're getting the current stock at a good price

That's odd as at least a few of the stores around here have completely removed the space for 0w-30 and replaced it with a Castrol Synthetic Blend.

I think I have now officially purchased the last GC locally. Found a case and bought it. All the other stores have changed the shelves and no longer even show 0-30W.

What is the deal with the 5w40 Syntec?
-claims that it is the "superior german formula, now blended in the states."
-looked to have the same approvals (with the exception of a footnote, on the porsche approval).

I picked this stuff up (on sale), with the hopes it is just as good -- but also because I wanted to believe that they were (in fact) getting more GC; and that I will exchange the US 5w40 for it.

Is the US 5w40 ("euro formula") good for my high output 1.8T (in 80-110 degree weather)?
-is the M1 (0w40) now the better choice (and worth the full $6.19)?

(first post: i appreciate any help)

There's nothing wrong with the Syntec 5w-40. I've run it in my VR6 at least a couple times and it's worked well.

The problem is, nobody really knows a lot about the stuff. And it only made that worse when it switched from made in Belgium, to made in US. Base stock is unknown, and I'm unaware if any VOA's were posted after the switch to US made. Still, I'm not sure you can really go wrong with it, it's likely as good or better than Syntec's other offerings, and possibly Mobil1. I'd try it in your engine and see if it likes it.

I noticed that it does not carry the "VW 503 01" approval (a la GC 0w30 or M1 0w40).
-But agree, it would likely be fine.

I did however exchange the Syntec for Valvoline SynthPower 10w30.
-AZ was running a deal (5qts + fram "toughgaurd" filter) for $18.

They didn't have the toughgaurd filter for my car -- so I got lucky, and the "zoner" substituted 2 M1 highcapacity filters

!
-I am just going to add the SynthPower oil treatment to raise the viscosity (and I am hoping it should be good).

I stopped in my local Autozone a few weeks ago and the manager told me he had two cases of GC on back order. Went in yesterday and the GC spot on the shlelf is gone ...

.. Hopefully by the time my stash (about 30 qts) runs out there will be more available ..else I guess I'll just have to switch ...

All the stores in North Dakota no longer stock GC and I also checked several in Minnesota this weekend and they too no longer stock it...

Well at least I have 76 quarts stock in my basement!!

At last count I've got about 23 quarts of GC, don't know what I'll do with it yet... I was going to run it in my '95 Civic which is about two years' worth of oil but I now have 16 quarts of AMSOIL HDD which is probably every bit as good in the little tin-can wonder...

Yes, I think AutoZone really messed up on this one. GC was one of the very, very, very few things that set AZ apart from the rest.

I cleaned out the GC at one of the local AZs a couple of months back when they had the 5 quart + Bosch filter special. The rack stayed empty for several weeks, and I expected the GC’s tag and place in the rack to eventually become occupied by something else. But today, much to my surprise, I noticed they had refilled the rack!

My AZ still has GC. Bought a couple of quarts two days ago, with a date code of M063126. Left quite a few quarts on the shelf for my later purchase. No, I'm not telling you where I'm at. But I am close to BrianWC.

This autozone is still stocking GC - 5350 fruitridge rd, sacramento, CA - 916 453-0171. I just bought 6 quarts this morning for oil change - M070116ATW18065, $4.49/quart. There is 6 left on the shelf, not sure if they have anymore in the back. Schedule shipment is every two weeks according to them. Call them up to check if you are interested.
